AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

I would imagine we would survey it and perform a cost analysis to see if its worth it.

Of course, that would be the implied task.

If it's in good shape and the price is right, I don't think we should turn our noses up at another tanker. Even if it would be just until a 3rd JSS was built.

It's funny that you mentioned this as I recently mentioned just that scenario to someone pretty high in the food chain as a way to mitigate crewing challenges. There seems to be no appetite to go with a civilian crewing model based on recent experiences.

It was an option, but I don't think it was the intent.

I stand to be corrected though.
The intent was an interim vessel so it was pretty clear the intent wasn't to operate the ships ourselves. The buy part well never heard anyone except Federal Fleet say that. The price they were quoting a few years ago was eye watering.

The intent with Asterix was a single 5 years contract, at which point the RCN was supposed to have received delivery of PROTECTEUR. Now they have had to pile on another 5 year term. But I'm pretty sure that will be the last one. After that, I don't see the RCN wanting to keep her - but if the RCN makes too much noise about getting a third PRO class vessel, I can see the politicians foisting Asterix on the RCN. Better for the RCN to wait until PRESERVER is built and the government has divested itself of Asterix - which has then been pawned off to someone South of Mexico by Davie - to start asking for a third one, to be built after the heavy icebreaker.

As for civilian crewing, with the PRO class, that ship has sailed: the self defense systems, sensors and combat systems are military grade and will not be put in the hands of a civilian agency, even if it was the RCNAVs.

Of course we are.
As a mother ship for the group yes it can, and refuel and support other MCM units like the german pocket tanker we often operate with. AOPS small boats would ideal to operate the REMUS 100 that we have. Tons of stuff they can do as a support ship.

Did they say why? I mean what great gig to retire after 20 and do that…

There are a bunch of ex RCN crew onboard. It might be as simple as a civilian master that can overrule the RCN OIC, who knows.

Or ST(A) didn't like being told they weren't allowed to play reindeer games by the master ?

Sounds like the perfect job for an AOPs.

Anyways back to tankers.

I don't know never sailed on Asterix although I relish the opportunity and wasn't aware of the friction you mentioned.

Take the lessons learned from the US, UK and the federal Fleet services to build up a RCFA to be able to run large non-combatants. It can also be a way of building up the Merchant Marine, getting ship Officers Cadets seatime and ensuring we have the civilian Masters and Mates to run the Coastal trades and Ships Pilots.

So we do want to send AOPs into warzones ?

Mine warfare command platform. Warzone doesn't necessarily mean level 8 on the Risk Allowance scale. Watch and shoot after the Ukraine conflict has ended. AOPS will be there with a NATO mine warfare flotilla, guaranteed.

Personality dependant as is all things when people are involved.

Is it true they tried 3 times to break the launch bottle on Pro, on Friday the 13th?
