Replacing the Subs

If we're going to have a FOB for Naval Forces in Europe my suggestion would be Souda Bay, Crete.

Get the yanks to give us some square footage at NAS Souda Bay and push forward some stores and Log and Eng pers.
and every boat would have to traverse the length of the Med. plus the length of Europe before reaching its patrol area. Italy, France, Spain and Turkey have the Med. sewed up for coverage, I would think that the North Atlantic and Scandinavia would be our major operating area. Wouldn't Faslane be a more appropriate location?

In the latter instance, the boat spent four days under the ice, the navy added. Capt Pereira said deployments like Arpão’s were operationally significant in the region.

I’m not overly impressed by 4 days (and it is less than that as that includes entry and exit from the ice shelf area) during the summer.

I wonder what that sub's operational availability is on a yearly basis? Over its existing life span?

Portuguese sub conducts under-ice operations. An interesting read, especially in light of what we are hearing our next generation of subs will be expected to do. Note this is hardly a state-of-the-art submarine.

Interesting article, the CO of WINDSOR was a rider on that trip. (third from the right in the picture of crew on the bridge)
