The Next Canadian Government

Thank you.

Also from Statistics Canada,

Yes thank you for highlighting that. Rural Canada is in fact more minuscule that my rounded up number from 4 months ago.

Sure is, here’s Statistics Canada’s report based on the 2021 census to include a definition of rural.

If that map is accurate, people in Williams Lake, 100 Mile House and Merritt will be surprised to find out they’re “urban”…🤣

If the government wants to hold the status-quo (or even improve) on defence spending commitments, it will need to hire in DND even if other places are being cut.
There’s hiring, then there’s hiring. It won’t help DND much if we get a sudden intake of a bunch of laterals from random departments whose positions got just deleted — experts in passport procurement won’t help.

Bonus points if people come in to DND to retain their salary then suddenly claim to be morally opposed to working within the military industrial complex and demand accommodation. Our Conscientious Objector policy doesn’t seem to cover civilian service.

Based on the 2021 Census of Population, as of 2024-12-09, Statistics Canada put the rural population at 5,957,695 persons.

As I indicated up thread, StatsCan’s definition of “urban” is very broad. To be considered “rural”, you’d pretty much have to live on a farm or in a cabin in the bush. A small town of 10,000 people 2-3 hours away from cities of 90,000 people too urban for StatsCan.

My point is that a good deal of the “rural” ridings are surprisingly “urban”.

The 84% of “urban” dwellers are more diverse than we stereotype. According to that StatsCan page, a good deal like to hunt, fish and work in the natural resource and agriculture industries. 🙂

As of the 2021 census, nearly 6 million people ( 16% of the total Canadian population ) lived in rural areas of Canada.

For many people, rural is a feeling that cannot be explained or quantified by numbers.
