Pics from Op Athena

index.php

Does the turret spin around?  If it doesnt will they ever have ones that spin around? (like the ones alot of US Humvees have)

Well you know how it is with the support fags trying to tell the pointy end "no this is what works " well if they knew if it worked so well were did they get the experience that the issue kit works? if they are so keen to be in the lead why didn't they join the pointy end of the stick instead of the blunt end?  bunch of wogs just like in 02 there running the show for no good reason other then to get there name on the board.
I'll also add my kudos for the good pics .

The cupola on the GWagon does turn (handcrank) and the NATO medium weapon pintel (C6 in the soft mount for us)

The entire idea is you crank the turret to where your arcs are and then can traverse the gun in afiarly liberal arc on the soft mount.

Love that happy face on the muzzle of that M203PI!

Stay safe,

Wes

Can I assume the yellow tips of the M203 bombs indicate HE?  I've only seen the blue (chalk) ones.

Let me join the others in saying "great photos"!  I particularly like the ricked out C9, with the adjustable butt stock ... but what the heck is that scope on it?  I've never seen anything like it!

Keep up the good work.

I am hoping to be on Roto 3, although if I go, it will be as D&S PL at Camp Mirage.  As it stands, training starts next week, and I'm only an alternate.  Still, I got two pairs of dessies out of it!

theres 2 types of HE theres the  yellow and the gold one has a 4 second delay from when it bumps something and 1 that goes off when it thumps into something . heres a partial view of both types  not shown too clearly but you can make out the fact theres  the two colours .

A/N PAS-13 Thermal Weapon Sight - it is the sh*t (and lighter than the C79...)

I will also echo the chorus and say great pics Kev. Thank you for sharing.

As a customs guy, I find it noteworthy and interesting that the M203 grenades are about the same size as, and would fit inside of a can of coke.

I'd like to think if I get overseas on Roto 3 there would be lots I could take pictures of and share, but I have a funny feeling D&S at Mirage won't generate quite as interesting pics as Kabul.

Talking about op Athena, i stumbled on this pic http://www.combatcamera.dnd.ca/photoarchive/HiRes/%212004/092004/IS2004-0623a.jpg

The guy is on patrol (so his rifle should be armed) but his fire selector is on R  :o

EME Seals....
I wonder how long it will take for that rumor to spread around and pop up in the recruiting forum :)

ahheemmm...not all Eme guys are gungho seal wannabe types.... Some of us actually believe in the fact that personal kit can sometimes better suit the situation

That's because this guy is saying....

guess the site doesn't like me linking to it :P

OPSEC precludes me from sorting you out to the full extent that you need. Suffice it to say that the soldier in the picture is not doing anything wrong.  I am assuming you have never been on a mission so I suggest you go back to surfing the net or watching TV and let soldiers get on with their job.

Cheers,

First post so bear with me as I offer up my thoughts on 1 Bde.   A little background of myself may help.   By trade I am a trucker, posted to 1 Svc Bn, lucky me...I have had the opportunity to broaden my horizons by branching out and taking courses that most truckers normally wouldn't take.   I have also been lucky enough to train with some of the best soldiers in Canada and other countries.

I just returned from 7 months in Afghanistan.   I did however have the privilege of working with 5 Bde and I will say that having never worked with them before I was a bit biased going into this tour.   6 months later I sang a different tune.   I also had the honor of spending a month into 1 Bde's tour, witnessing the handover and change of command as well as attitudes.   I have to honestly say I was embarrassed to be from 1 Bde.   After telling my new found friends that Kandahar didn't go to anyones head and that they will send only the best, I was mortified to see that most people introduced themselves to 5 Bde as "well this sure isn't Kandahar".   You don't say...Come on guys stop living in the past.   I was there too, I didn't run around bragging about it to the Vandoos.   Different mission, different goal.   I was also shocked to here a PPCLI WO say we are at war, why don' t we have the full support of blah blah.   WAR!!!!!   In case I missed the news article this is a peace mission.   Security Assistance. To many people lose focus and go off on their own agendas.

To Quote KevinB
"Beleive it or not the 1 Svc Bn Btl Gp here has now forbidden 3VP and 1VP from using any non issue kit

Seems like truckers and bean counters don't beileve we need different kit to do our job (while their kit stays in their barracks box.)

So we are forced now to wear the issue TV    and even better the Bianchi UM84 holster "

I may be wrong but it wouldn't be NSE making the rules.   NCE does that.   The BG Commander would have the final say, who is a Strat.   Everyone always blames the CSS   guys for shortcomings within the Combat arms.   In the end it comes down to leadership.   On Roto 1 we had no problems using non issue kit.   The holsters were the big problem.   I was using a Safariland SLS. Alot of other guys chose different brands but the Bianci is a liability and the leadership new that.

Being a trucker, I do believe we need to "accessorize" our kit. My next question is though, how much crap do you need to carry?   I used my issue TV and a bug out bag.   I fit more than enough ammo, gucci kit and overnight gear for 48hrs in there.   If something happens I guarantee you won't be needing half the crap you bring anyway.   Remember how these people fight.   Have you read any of the reports from the attacks that have taken place there?   Hit and run.   If they want to hit you they will and chances are you won't see it coming.   For example the Norwegians.

So after all that my point is don't assume that all CSS are wogs.   You do not know what training they may have.

By the way nice pics.   Maybe I will find the time to upload mine.

Have a safe tour.

Soleman etc. I am glad I rasied your ire...

The TF RSM is a Trucker - and unfortunately the RSM does dictate kit.

Now the kit rule only seems to apply to the 031's and 011's - for several other groups who seem to think they are JTF (but aren't close) are running odds and sods kit.

This is a Chapter VII mission - so it is theoretically a warfighting mandate - unlike Bosnia/Crotia or Cyprus (and I miss that tour) we have some very robust ROE's that allow us to go get bad guys.

On kit -
Please explain where the kit goes in the TV - cause I have seen guys trying to kit it in - and it won't fit.
