You will generally get rotated through several different units on base as you do your OJT/apprenticeship. Generally you will not be actually posted to a unit outside of a service battalion until you are fully qualified. Then you can request a posting to wherever you want and it will be left to manpower requirements and the career manager.

Any one finish there bmq recently who is  in the vehicle technician, or in training for vehicle tech??

Please shoot me a message id love to pick your brain i start bmq November 13th and would like an idea of what to expect after bmq

Hey all, thanks in advance.

I'm looking for information on training for vehicle technician after bmq, i have searched, and read and read and searched but cant seem to find information.

Anyone who is a vehicle technician and is willing to let me pick your brain please message me.

Questions non vehicle technicians might be able to help with.

1. What is the course called example infantry has dp1, what do vehicle techs have?

2. General wait time after bmq? I get it Veries  but a general time would be nice.

3. How is the training laid out? I believe its a total of 18 months from my understanding but all i could find was 4 week driver training and 30 weeks of electrical and engineering training.

In short will it Be a straight 18 months or is it split up so i can do a few months go home for a week, do a few months go home ect.

Thanks in advance, also if there are threads out there that answer these questions please point me to them.

1.  It is called... DP1.

2.  You'll go from BMQ and probably be loaded on a military driver's course in advance of your DP1 starting.  Gaps depend on when the next course is scheduled to be run.  There are efforts to bring people in so their training progresses within minimal gaps.

3.  Training follows a training plan, and as I recall is modular - you'll learn different types of systems and how they work.  Once the in class portion is done, you'll do on-the-job training (OJT) with set tasks you have to complete.  OJT periods are variable in length, depending on how quickly you can complete things.

After the 4+30 weeks you'll generally be sent to an OJT centre.  While there, you will have some opportunities for leave, generally over the summer and over Christmas.

Do vehicle technicians work on the weapon components on vehicles?

Or is that weapon technician?

Weapons on vehicles are worked on by a combo of weapons and eo techs depending on the system

Vehicle techs generally dont repair weapon systems.

*Disclaimer* As will be made clearly obvious I am not especially familiar with military lingo as of yet, please do not hold this against me. I'm sure I will get the hang of it rather quickly.

I am curious what courses vehicle techs are offered? I understand that clearly there is no reason for someone in that trade to be offered something like para, etc. as there is no practicality in that, however are they able to take courses like hand to hand combat or other self defense stuff.  While I know that again there is possibly no need for a vehicle tech to take advanced hand to hand, I would like to take something like that for personal protection, both in and out of uniform. Is there a possibility for members in this trade to take things like this through the military or would I have to search that out in a civilian context.

thanks for any knowledge anyone would care to pass along. Getting pumped for BMQ

Not many courses like that for VTechs.

But on many bases there are clubs that do. Jiu-jitsu is quite popular on the bases I've been at.

Hi Guys,

I did my reserve EME common, QL3, and QL4 as a vehicle tech. I am looking into becoming a civilian heavy equipment technician. I have my course reports, but I assume the union that represents the HET's will want to know what I did and how many hours were spent. Who would I contact to get that kind of data or does anyone here have experience dealing with this?

There used to be a program in place called the CF Military Equivalencies Program (CFMEP) that provided that sort of information.  I'm not certain how that program has progressed.  I'd suggest contacting the Base Personnel Selection Officer from your support base for more information; that sort of info is in their wheelhouse.

I posted the link in Reply #161, but it no longer works.
