Updated Army Service Dress project

A British uniform that doesn’t even say “Canada” anywhere that a casual observer could read. I guess we really are a country without our own identity.
Maybe we need to stop being so self conscious and stop calling everything "Canadian"... Does CANSOFCOM really need the CAN in front? Does CJOC really need the C? How about CSOR?

We throw Canada, or Canadian in front of everything... Nations that are confident of their national identity don't.

It makes sense if you work in coalitions, which we almost always do.

It’s one of those things where you don’t have to ask “which nation’s JOC” when every nation has a Joint Operations Command.

We could do that in an international coalition, but there is no need to make it the official name, apart from "because Canada".

I don't dislike the "Canada" flashes on uniform shoulders, but I also wouldn't be upset if they went away. We have enough maple leaves on everything we wear that I'm sure most people who know anything about uniforms could tell we are Canadian. If they aren't sharp enough to catch the maple leaves, the "Canada" on our shoulders might not help much either...

Given that almost all of the time this uniform is worn is inside Canada, is that really required ? Are we so insecure we have to remind ourselves we’re Canadian at every step?

Edit add: behold this Marine wearing a British Uniform, it doesn’t even say USA on it!

Wouldn’t need to. The Marine would tell anyone and everyone they’re a Marine.

I’m suggesting that not changing your uniform since WWII, in the case of the USMC green uniform, plays a part.
I don’t disagree. My point was more that the USMC uniform is identical in cut and design to the “British” style service dress and yet no one would doubt this man is a marine. Infact a great many nations wear similar patterns and successfully managed to remember they aren’t British. Let’s be realistic, there’s minimal exposure of service dress to the general population without pretty clear indications we’re Canadian.

The interesting thing is that from the FVEY nations, the British Commonwealth ones do have national flashes on their uniforms to show that they aren’t British.

If I have one criticism its that it needs a "stronger" belt. The cloth one looks wimpy and cheep. Invest in some leather and (dare I say it) a Sam Browne (there, I dared). Oh - and I'd go so far as to say Corcoran boots with bloused trousers. Time to look like soldiers again.

🍻
The plan is for officers and CWOs to wear a "Sam Browne" belt.

Damn. Was hoping the CAF would pick the imperial grey uniforms of Palpatine's galactic empire. And yes, they can wear CANADA on the shoulder patch. So when does this new uniform kick in?

Most data I can see is that its a slow roll out.

Some units will receive it as a user trial (I think LdSH(RC) is on the hook for their 125th in August) with a larger roll out coming afterwards. The goal is mainly a "replace by attrition" so as to not break the bank in the first year of production.

Eventually, it should have all Army personnel in this new uniform by 2027 at the latest.

Shoulder flashes are for your regiment, not your country. We all know which nation's uniform we're wearing.
Yes. It is obvious we design our uniforms for the wearers and not to communicate to observers. Small Canadian military egos would rather be assumed British than confused for a member of another unit.

Most of the time we wear any uniform is inside Canada, because that is where we spend most our time. As someone who has worn service dress in NATO & ABCANZ settings, I can attest that the uniform matters … particularly if part of the reason the govt sent you is so Canada can be observed contributing despite our low defence spending.

A uniform doesn’t necessarily need to say “Canada”, but if you wear the British uniform with British rank insignia then you will be assumed as British. In fact, wearing a distinct national uniform is more important than the sewn on national flashes. Nobody confuses a German or American or Canadian for any other nation, but even the Brits cannot distinguish the Australians from the New Zealanders while the Americans confuse all three … and this persists even after the introductions.

The USMC uniform is sufficiently distinct in its combination of cut, colour, and insignia from the British. It is not trying for that Commonwealth look. The two do not get confused in an international setting. The commonwealth uniforms do.

Funny no one complains about the green DEU looking like the old US Army service dress from the 1960’s - 1980’s minus the ugly wedge hat. Even the Yanks changed their service dress at least twice since then and are now wearing something that wouldn’t look out of place in 1945
There were complaints to that effect when the US Army wore the green uniform, and we are not stuck in some binary choice between an American vs British uniforms. We can do our own thing.
