Sikh & India (Alleged) Shenanigans in Canada (split fm Non-Muslim terr thread)

Excerpting part of today’s RCMP statement:

It sounds like a lot of evidence has been tabled in a closed setting, and that India hasn’t been super receptive. Neither part of that surprises me.

I’m still very curious about what prompted this to be announced with this degree of urgency on a stat holiday, or for the meetings to be scheduled on a weekend.
Perhaps the scheduled murders were to happen on Tuesday? I have never heard the RCMP make such a bold accusation regarding an investigation. Wow.

Odd that most of the shadow cabinet have posed the response of the leader of the opposition on social media.

The leader of the opposition, however, has not. And has a number of photos sitting beside the PNG'd high commissioner.
The Leader of the Opposition’s PA team still sleeping off their turkey? :sneaky:

Not important enough?

Or too important to his enablers?
Wouldn't want to draw the eye tooooooooo much to which party was singled out in the NSICOP report re: interference with their leadership process, right? ;)

Boosters'll say the leader has spoken, even if he didn't hand out the handout.

Haters'll say it's similar to the opposition to UKR help and support for OAS increases - do just enough for politics' sake, but "clarify" later with "but we really don't mean it - it's just opposing for the sake of opposing."

"Politics" is in the eye of the beholder - YPMMV (your political mileage may vary) ....

So perhaps it is because I strongly support the leader of the opposition but how about we take the pokes at him over to his thread and not here?

Team Orange's response ....

….especially with all the cots and messing available in the QRA facilities across from Iqaluit’s airport terminal… 😉

I won't be happy with the government or RCMP/ CSIS, until the names of the MPs who benefitted from foreign interference are published. And it better be before the election writ is dropped. Canadians deserve to know who they're voting for. This particular incident with India is simply just a part of the puzzle. A puzzle that has a lot more parts than this.

How about pass a bill requiring all party leaders to obtain file for a security clearance within 30 days of taking office. The leader of the opposition in light of recent events looks more suspicious then before in refusing to let his history be looked into.

But include in that legislation that no parliamentarian can be bound to perpetual silence and non-disclosure by previous governments so as to be forced to withhold information from the public, even when appropriately de-classified or summarized in a manner as to inform the public of threats against the nation.

But they aren’t. If information has been appropriately declassified/redacted and released, that’s fair game, so long as they don’t go beyond the declassified into what remains safeguarded. A good recent example is when Elizabeth May did her presser where she was careful to limit herself to what was openly released. As long as proper declassification processes are followed, that’s all doable. There is also explicit authority in the CSIS act to disclose information to help counter threats.

A general consideration underlying all of this- and I know you, G2G, know this, but not everyone realizes it - Canada receives and uses a lot of security intelligence from foreign partners, particularly five eyes. That’s a very robust and open relationship, notwithstanding whatever political squabbles are going on on a given day. But even though we’ll rely on foreign intelligence to identify and investigate threats to our national security, it’s not ours to declassify and release publicly or for court proceedings like a prosecution, even in vague and limited terms- at least not if we want to keep getting it. That complicates the release of threat related information by the government.

And, of course, there is always the need to protect sources and methods… Say too much publicly about what Canada knows about the current threat, and we could burn our ability to detect the next one(s).

There needs to be a balance between informing Canadians of threats, and protecting the means by which those threats are addressed. That will often not favour disclosure.
