I’ve been in Canada since I was very young, but I’m a dual citizen and I was born in another country. I’ve left Canada once for vacation in the States and once to visit extended family in my birth country. I don’t have any ties besides the citizenship that my parents never bothered to renounce.

Do they tell you beforehand if you need a pre-security for ROTP? Or would this just complicate my background check later on in the application process?

There is information that is put into the security system with your application; a response is then received stating whether you need a pre-security screening or not. Just because you have dual citizenship doesn't mean that you will; however you didn't state what country the dual citizenship is with.
