"Killer Chick" USAF pilot lands A10 without hydraulics!!!!

I don't think was insurgents who did the damage. I'm pretty sure this story dates from the opening days of OIF and so the then-intact Iraqui my would be the most likely culprit. Thoguh i could be wrong.

We can both appreciate that an Apache and a Hog have very different speeds!

With an airspeed of around 440mph it well within the speed envelope of late WWII fighters, who were often shot down with unguided light AA.

I suspect the world leaders in dealing with modern AD systems is Israel who have to contend with belligerent neighbours with fairly modern intact AD systems.

An odd article, they mention Rocket Propelled Grenades (aka RPG) and then say an unguided antiaircraft missile hit it (gee I don’t think they being making those since the demise of the CF 100)

If the chunk missing in the stabilizer was hit by a anti-personal RPG, that would explain the line of holes in the fuselage, all of which look like they were made either by bullets or possibly ball bearings.

There is a technique used by relatively unsophisticated forces of having the troops aim at a point in the sky and then open fire on order. The aircraft then flies into the cone of fire. It was taught and used in the Second World War and I recall a briefing at the US Air Defense School that mentioned US high performance aircraft being lost to it in Vietnam. While very low tech, it can work and I suspect it does wonders for troop morale.

The Canadian army dabbled with it in the bad old days, depending upon the whims of commanders. I think the acronym (which indicates a degree of official blessing) was SAAD for something like small arms air defence. If memory serves me, the combat small arms course in CTC in the mid-seventies gave basic instruction including live firing in tracking and leading aircraft using radio controlled model airplanes as targets.

I believe it's also somewhere in the original C-9 book,  I seem to remember something about laying on your back, gun tucked under the armpit, butt on the ground, and whaling away.

The Gun Dish Fire Control Rdr should have spiked her RWR.

I like GW's ZU-23 theory.
