I just completed my basic in St Jean recently and after scrolling through the 8 pages on this thread I can offer this;  yes there is a swim test at St Jean and no you do not have to pass the test in order to complete basic.  Personally i am a good swimmer but failed it the first time i attempted...

although you are allowed to take all of that stuff with you, do not take it to Farnham with you.  They tend to frown on that stuff out there.  The camera will be ok, but cell phones and mp3 players and stuff are no-no's.

I will be in St. Jean for January 9th Basic as well.  Coming from St. John's NF where i have been doing the NCSTTP program at the Marine Institute for the past year.  Dont know what my course number is though.

I will be in St. Jean for a January 9th start date for my BMQ.  And for the record, rations are $399 or right in that area.  i know they are between $390 and $400 for sure and quaters are $74, each month.

LTA is determined by your means of travel and how far you have to travel.  The military has a formula that will determine how much they will ASSIST you in your travels.  That doesnt mean they will cover the cost of the entire trip.  If the trip home cost you $300 and you were only entitled to...

Did you happen to look into the NCSTTP program for weapons techs at the MI campus at MUN?  Great program if you were going NWT, if you dont mind the 2 years in school.
