Positive Recognition of the Military: A New Aspect of Canadian Culture?

There is a Timmie's in the UK.  It's in London (at least it was there was in 2006, when I was last in the Big Smoke).  It's on Haymarket Street, just off Picadilly Square in Westminister.  Word is they are also popping up in SPAR convenience stores throughout the UK.

    In Flanders Field

Lieutenant-Colonel McCrae is not buried in Flanders Fields as is suggested by the poster. He is buried in Wimereux, in the Pas de Calais region of France.  He died there after succumbing to pneumonia and meningitis.  Flanders, as we all likely know, is in Belgium. McCrae served there from 1915...

    Retirement Gift for Naval officer.

The sword is a great idea.  It's very expensive though. Personally I would love to get a sword, but I wouldn't by one myself because there is always something that is a higher priority (eduaction for my son, food, mortgage).  See this: http://www.wkc-solingen.de/newshop/uknavy.html...

    Passchendaele movie

This is a powerful film.  To say I was moved by it would be an understatement. I had a Grandfather who fought in the Salient but was wounded a year before the Battle of Passchendaele while at the Somme, and a Great Uncle who was there and was wounded in Dec 1917. Pale Gross did right by them. ...

    CP-140 Aurora

POSS HIGH 3.  Everyone will know more in about two weeks.  Don't despair yet, but there is a good chance that there will be a delay. Ask your CO at morning brief for an update.

    CP-140A Arcturus conversion ?

I have to agree.  If it had to come off the flight-line, this is probably the best use of the airframe

    Strategic Air to air Refueling

This is a bit philosophical, and I wager off topic - but it is a pet peeve of mine.  The Canadian Air Force has got to get out of the mind set that says "strategic" means "large" and "intercontinental" (i.e. long range).  This is old thinking.  We used to call our Boeing 707s strategic, because...

    CP-140A Arcturus conversion ?

One (119) is already a maintenance trainer in Greenwood.  One will likely be used the same way in Comox.  I don't knw what will happen with the third irframe, but I expect it will be sold. BB

    CP-140A Arcturus conversion ?

We could do that, provided the takeoffs and landings are restricted. Apparently they are gone starting April 09 - no discussion.

Precision Strike Capability for the Auroras

CDN Aviator, I'm with ya dude.  Lots of will down here at the "coalface".  Without appropriate levels of will at the CAS, VCDS, CDS, PM, and Privy Council levels, I am afraid us tactical chumps are just pissing in the wind. BB PS An illuninator cannot be used for direct designation of targets...

    CP-140A Arcturus conversion ?

Although the Arcturus are the lowest time airframes in the fleet, the aircraft are amongst the highest cycle airframes in the history of P-3 aviation. Cycles being takeoffs and landings and pressurize/unpressurize.  ELINT and COMINT are valuable roles, but my feeling is UAVs can do this better...

Precision Strike Capability for the Auroras

Possibly.  But an illuminator is not the same as a designator. Conceptually, it wouldn't be to hard to put two 500 Lb PGMs (or maybe two 250 lb'ers) in the bomb bay and drop them from the racks at a high altitude.  All the while, one of our guys is designating a target with a laser designator...

Precision Strike Capability for the Auroras

Despite CdnAviator's accurate statemement, I for one would love to see this capability on the Aurora. If we are there doing ISR anyway, I think it would be of value to have two 500 lb PGMs on board for targets of opportunity. It would not be hard to put a laser designator on the aircraft...

Do I take the pilot offer??

Gungho, The pilot job is like many others in some ways.  Being a firefighter is awesome and rewarding work.  My brother in law did that for nearly 40 years.  He loved the job until he hung up his boots for the last time back in May. It's honourable work, and you have the world by the tail...

    My "dishonorable" Decision

Elecgitarguy, I agree with most of the other posts. As others have said, family is important.  Although they disagree are and are sometimes insulting in their criticism, I suggest you just tell them they are entitled to their opinion and that you insist that they respect yours.  Support is...
