Political impacts of Ukraine war

Lavrov: Britain’s peacekeeping plan a ploy to save ‘Kyiv regime’

Eeee, by gum, 'e's a canny lad that Lavrov and not so daft. 'E saw right through that one.

Sounds like the far right in Europe is now starting to distance themselves from Trump over Ukraine.

A good Q&A session. It seems there will be no WW3, according to Michael Clarke, but further outbreaks of 'military violence' in Europe are inevitable.

'Where will we dig our toes in' against further Russian aggression? is the big question...

I found the bolded part most interesting. Ukraine would be the place that has all sorts of knowledge and knowhow about cheap automatous drones, if you were in the market of starting up domestic production. Though having a land-based anti-ship missile system (like the R-360 Neptune) is also something I can see there being great interest in and one that doesn't rely on the US.

I spoke with Canada’s Prime Minister @MarkJCarney. It was a good and substantive conversation covering many important topics.

I congratulated him on his assumption of office and thanked Canada for its assistance, particularly for the defense packages and support of our energy sector.

The Prime Minister made the right points about how we need to step up pressure on Moscow. The shadow fleet, the banking sector. We must impose all-out sanctions on everything that provides Russia with funding for its war. Only then can we force Putin to a just and lasting peace.

We also discussed the humanitarian aspect of security guarantees for Ukraine. This includes rebuilding our country and supporting the economy after the war ends. We will work on this.

We touched upon the Ukrainian agenda during Canada’s G7 presidency. We will continue interacting in various formats and at different levels to make our cooperation even more meaningful and practical.

Additionally, we discussed the development of bilateral relations between our countries. Canada is interested in military-industrial and defense cooperation. Throughout this war, we have gained significant experience in the production of EW systems, long-range missiles, and drones. Ukraine is ready for joint production.

Thank you for the support, and I look forward to productive cooperation.

But if Russia does not agree to the terms that were on the table when Ukraine agreed to them, why should Ukraine entertain the idea of any more negotiating? They definitely should not agree to any ceasefire that will allow Russia to preposition troops and supplies closer to the contact line.

So today’s “deal” was a smashing success. A moratorium on targeting a Russian strategic weakness. Their oil is now safe. Meanwhile…
Thx for this - already loving the Darth J Trump satire account. A bit less finesse than The Master, but still good LOL!!!!

This is a pain to moderate from my phone, can you folks take this into the politics thread? We'll do a cleanup later.

You think? I see Donald folding like a cheap suit for his buddy Vlad. When Vlad doesn’t cooperate or breaks a ceasefire, Donald will just say it didn’t happen and call it “fake news”.

You're reading the room wrong.

Past performance predicts future behaviour. When it comes to Vlad, Donald becomes a poodle.

If he gets tough with Vlad, it will be the first time.

Way back when Trump was trying to convince the EU to get off of Russian energy (and they laughed), was that a pro-russian move too?

Your assessment is flawed.

Yeah, those were the old salad days when "convincing" involved telling Europe the U.S. was "subsidizing" them because the countries weren't buying enough petroleum products from America?

President Trump supplied Ukraine in his first term with Javelins and Stingers, something that previous administrations hadn’t done. He also sent 10thSFG into Ukraine to train the AFU, something that previous American governments hadn’t done been unwilling to do as well.

President Trump earlier this month refused to to extend the Biden Administration’s waiver on Russian fuel sales - cutting off banking options for Russian oil/gas. So no European purchasing via traditional means.

I don’t think it is enough personally and would like to see a lot more pressure on Russia, but it is hurting Russia financially.
