Brodeur, Heatley to defend World Championship crown

Canada named 22 of the alloted 23-man roster, leaving one spot open for debate.

(CP) -- Goaltender Martin Brodeur and young star Dany Heatley will lead two-time defending champion Canada at the IIHF world championships April 30 to May 15 in Austria.

A 22-man roster announced Monday by Hockey Canada was missing big names like Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla, while featuring some new faces to top-level international competition.

They include forward Mike Fisher and defenceman Chris Phillips of the Ottawa Senators and defenceman Sheldon Souray of the Montreal Canadiens.

Each team is allowed to name 23 players to its roster, so the Canadian team is holding one spot open. It wasn't immediately known why.

Brodeur, of the New Jersey Devils, backstopped Canada to gold medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

He is backed up by Roberto Luongo of the Florida Panthers, who was in goal for world championship wins in 2003 in Finland and 2004 in the Czech Republic, and Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars.
Obviously the open spot is being reserved for Todd Bertuzzi if he's able to play.

Well, it's no World Cup team but I think anything less than gold would be disappointing.

Hey, considering who said no to this team, this looks alright! GO GET EM!

The defence has four players returning from last fall's World Cup squad -- Wade Redden of Ottawa, Robyn Regehr of the Calgary Flames, Ed Jovanovski of the Vancouver Canucks and Scott Hannan of the San Jose Sharks.

Also on defence are Phillips, Souray and Dan Boyle of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Missing from the blue-line this time around are veterans like Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger and Rob Blake.

Nine of the 13 World Cup forwards are going to Austria, including Heatley of the Atlanta Thrashers -- the MVP of last year's world championships -- Shane Doan of the Phoenix Coyotes, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby of the Detroit Red Wings, Simon Gagne of the Philadelphia Flyers, Patrick Marleau of San Jose, Brenden Morrow of Dallas, Ryan Smyth of the Edmonton Oilers and Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins.

Other forwards are Brendan Morrison of the Vancouver Canucks, who led the Swedish league in scoring this season, Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Fisher.

National team head coach Mark Habscheid will be behind the bench. Canada opens the tournament April 30 against Latvia.

So it's almost like the "B" team but I think that we are still going to rock at the world cup, depending of course on what teams the other countries send. We can pretty well count out Sweden, no one is playing for them, what do you think folks!

I wouldn't say the "B" team, I'd say the younger team. Take a look at many of the guys left out, Lemieux, Neidermayer, Blake, Sakic, all excellent players, but many of them have likely played their last pro game. Ignila I'm not so sure about, he's young, he has the skill, maybe he just doesn't want to play....

But I'm liking what I see here, good, strong goaltending, with a veteran like Brodeur, and skilled slightly younger players like Luongo and Turco between the pipes, I'd say that's a good selection.

Only Defence I don't recognize is Boyle, but the rest are good, solid blueliners, they're all good, Redden and Phillips are the two best men Ottawa has(or had?), while Jovanoski brings experience, Reghr went to the cup finals with Calgary, I like these guys. Grit and skill.

Forwards....got some guys who go into the corners, force the puck around, hit hard, and have skill. I think that it's a good combination all around. Hopefully, they'll bring the cup back home to Canada.

I don't think there will be too many votes for anyone other than Canada...I'd love to see Bertuzzi playing if he's able to... :cdn:

OYE, I'd like to see Bertuzzi play as well. Boyle is a potent offensive threath from the TB lightning. The reason why most of those guys (Iginla, Sackic, Blake) are not playing is because they haven't played in a long time and would just not be physically ready. I think it's a good mix of guys also but the Russians and Czechs could both enter power house teams. As for the best defenseman on Ottawa, well Redden is good but Chara is at the next level now.  :salute:

Chara's good, but I still think Redden's a better blueliner overall. Not knocking on Chara or anything, I just believe Redden plays a better game.

I'm wondering here, who voted for the Germans? Didn't they come in last place in World Cup 2004?

2 votes for Germany? I didn't think even Germans living in Germany would think Germany's going to win!!!  :dontpanic:  :cdn:

Can't wait for this to start, I've been living of the OHL this year(go Knights!!!).  This definetly looks a like a good team to send but like someone else said a younger one, besides Brodeur and a few others. Dan Boyle is a defensemen from the lightining, he's a pretty decent player who's really good at moving the puck forward.  Only downside to him he's alittle small at like 5"9.

Not only is this a young Canadian team..  the majority, including BOTH goalies have not played competively this year..  that could really hurt them.  Russia will have an explosive team, but as in the World Cup, they'll only have an AHL goalie..

BOTH meaning their number 1 (Brodeur) and number 2 (Luongo).  Turco won't play.  Thats why Theodore turned it down.

What is it that Team Canada has against Bryan McCabe?  He should have been on the WCoH team and most definitely should have been on this.

Bah, stupid anti-leaf bias.

You mean "Can Opener McCabe" I think the problem is that his style doesn't fit into the team, he's not real aggresive and not real defensive, he just tends to be somewhere in between and he is a PP specialist. I don't think he even compares to Redden or Jovonaski but you could make an argument that he is somewhat Boyle like.

Competition will be especially tough this year IMHO with the NHL out of commission and most European players playing in other leagues.  Anybody know if Sweden's got Forsberg and Sundin?  That should make a pretty tough team.

Neither are playing, same with Markus Naslund and Niklas Lidstrom, however if they did have all those guys, they would be formidable, even without a goaltender!

Actually I think what has stopped McCabe from being on the team are his, sometimes quite notable, on ice brain farts.  He's a great D-man, and has done well in recent years here in Toronto, but there are times when I just shake my head at the dumb stuff he does.

But his wrist and slap shots from the blue line are a thing of beauty, I think, that despite his brain farts, he'd be a good addition to the team.  but hey, thats just one Leaf fan's opinion :p
