We win their minds by educating them about what we do and why we are needed. It is about history, and our current operations (and deficiencies related to having no money nor presence in Canadian culture) and future needs. It does not start with a change in our budget. The impetus for change must start with the voting public.

We wind their hearts with proper visibility. Here is the image we want--and need to project. It is this attitude that helped us win the big war half a century ago. We‘re soldiers first and foremost. This peacekeeping label has screwed us.

The problem is that the only way we will get an increased budget, new equipment, etc. is if the prime minister thinks it‘s in his best interest. With him (hopefully) getting ready to retire, he‘ll be looking at some way to get the Order of Canada after he retires, like Mulroney did, and the Armed Forces probavly isn‘t at the top of the list. We‘ll probably have to wait until there is a new government.

The change in attitude doesn‘t start with the prime minister. It starts on the streets of Canada... sure, Jean C. doesn‘t care about the military. But if, somehow, we once again start to be seen for what we are then I think we‘ll be on a major upswing.
