Pirates can buy AIS receivers so i'm not sure if keeping AIS data off a website is much help.

True, but at least, it's not free intel. They don't have cargo info of what's coming so that they can hone in on a specific ship. Having been there last year, the intel we got was that they are opportunists. They hit what they can and hopefully, the cargo may be valuable enough that the ship owners will pay the ransom. Case-in-point, they got a transport ship that had russian tanks and weapons onboard.
