Subject: Approval of Rollator Walker; Decline of Power Wheelchair
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) has considered your request for assistance to
independently mobilize longer distances outside your home and within your
community.
I am pleased to inform you funding has been approved for the purchase of a Stella HD
rollator walker ($664.98). I have approved Lawtons Home Health to supply the rollator
walker. They will be contacting you to arrange for delivery of this equipment. You can
contact them directly at 902-462-7400 (extension 5 then 2) if you have any questions or
concerns. If you do not receive your equipment within six weeks, please contact
Lawtons for assistance.
These decisions were made under sections 3 and 4 (b) of the Veterans Health Care
Regulations (VHCR).
According to our policies, VAC can provide equipment or home adaptation to assist you
to live independently at home by facilitating participation in your daily activities. In every
circumstance, VAC must consider the simplest option to meet your functional health
need.
I have reviewed and considered the information available in your file, including the
recent Community and Rehab Occupational Therapist (OT) assessments. After
considering simpler options, it was determined that a rollator walker was the best option
to meet your distance mobility needs. VAC has determined that your need for the
rollator walker is related to your entitled condition. Therefore VAC, can provide funding
for this equipment.

I have also considered your request for a power wheelchair. I regret to inform you that I
must decline this request. Please allow me to explain my decision.
A rollator walker is being provided to enable safe and independent distance mobility to
access your community. VAC has determined that your request for the power
wheelchair is not the simplest option to meet your functional health need and therefore
a power mobility device cannot be approved.
I truly regret that my decision for the power wheelchair could not be more favorable;
however, please be assured that your request was given a thorough review. I
encourage you to continue to make your needs known to the Department by calling
1-866-522-2122 so that, where possible, we may assist you.
Regarding your Rollator walker:
If you no longer require the rollator walker, you may choose to keep it or donate it to an
organization of your choice, VAC is not responsible for removing, repairing or
maintaining equipment that no longer meets your health needs. If your equipment
requires maintenance and is under warranty, please contact Lawtons directly. If your
equipment is out of warranty and needs repairs or maintenance, please contact your
VAC Area Office for further information. All repairs for equipment with an expired
warranty must be preauthorized by VAC.
