Trump administration 2024-2028

the problem is at least if some of which ive seen on twitter is true is they are not using the program for highly qualified individuals lacking in the US. By they i mean those that use the program and Elon in particular. Honestly i dont know why anyone would believe that given the abuses we have seen here in Canada.
The solution to this H1B is to not tie it to the employer and or put a minimum salary on it, say $250000

Well, if the stats of 1 in 10 are correct, then 10% of the population will not want to join. So the catchment area is smaller by default. That is a real world impact.

Obviously this is not the US, but I’ve served with many proud LGBTQ CAF members. They are happy to talk about their experiences so I’m going to extrapolate and say that getting pushed back to the shadows with a policy like “don’t say you’re gay” won’t help.

Yes, I find it quite funny. The Donald has quietly sided with Elon and Vivek though.

I think what Vivek said is remarkably accurate and it doesn't only apply to STEM. I see it in my own industry. I'm currently advertising a position and have a signing bonus & relocation assistance attached to the offer. We pay for everything and even pay a person during their training. The only ones who want the job are South East Asians. I have a bunch who work for me now and they tell their buddies how good of a job it is, who then also apply to try and work here.

I don't know why homegrown kids don't want to work these jobs? A few of my wife's friends boyfriends/partners/spouses are always lamenting how they can't find work, don't make enough money, etc.

I've offered to help them get a start in this business but none of them have taken me up on the offer.

My uncle is a general contractor who owns a decent sized construction business. He can't get anyone to work for him under the age of 50 and all of his carpenters, electricians, plumbers, etc are all around 5 or 6 years away from retirement.
Our education system, and society in general, have spent a couple of generations telling people that if they go into a physical job they're a loser with no future. We are now reaping the "rewards" of that approach to education and culture ...

Elon also offered up a solution to the problem of "people stealing ma jobs!"

Yep! I even think of my own family who basically questioned every decision I ever made career-wise because they were all against the norm and not in vogue with what everyone else was doing.

Joining the Military and getting a free education.
Switching Trades around halfway through my military career.
Electing to go in to a blue-collar trade when I decided to leave the Military.

They don't seem to mind now that they get to enjoy the benefits of that hard labour.

Meanwhile I'm like.....

is the 50th percentile supposed to be elite? On a GRE?

edit

its also a long way away from 0.1%

and $30000 cashiers at 7/11

50th percentile on GRE is good enough for entry to most graduate programs. It means you're in the top 50% of those attempting the test. Elon was making a point about how to get rid of degree mills that seem to be prevalent overseas.

$1.9 billion to refit 3 ships?

That is amateur money. We are much better at spending money on old ships in Canada…
I had a chuckle about that as well.

We put the sub in sub-optimal 😁

that doesnt make sense to me. 50% on a GRE may put you in an elite standing academically with respect to the rest of society as a whole but its not elite within academics at all by definition. Degree mills are graduate programs now and not undergraduate? The whole of the US has been a degree mill for generations now with a college on every corner

Its still a long way from his 0.1% of engineers for TESLA at 80,000 and 30,000 7/11 employees and whatever other nonsense is out there

The simplest way is just to situate the compensation. Surely no employer could complain about that if they actually had a shortage?

you couldnt grasp the amount of people that have quit working for me and mine over the years per time period.

Others are almost impossible to fire,

Mayor Mel Lastman put it this way,

They have jobs for life. I knew it was time to stop that. We tried to take it away from them because they had us by the balls. We fought like hell but couldn’t get rid of it. You don’t know what we had to go through. Try and fire them, you can’t.

Our education system, and society in general, have spent a couple of generations telling people that if they go into a physical job they're a loser with no future.

Some get tired of breaking their backs and switch to clean, inside work with no heavy lifting, and a thermostat on the wall. :)

NYT piece also archived here if link above doesn't work for you - Supreme Court docket attached.
There’s a separation of powers issue here. This is a matter where the judiciary needs to rule on a challenge to legislation. While the executive, or other interested parties, could seek to file an amicus brief on the actual issues, it’s inappropriate for the executive - or soon to be executive - to attempt to delay the court’s proceedings on the matter because of a hypothetical executive political intervention down the road.

Simply put there’s no direct role for the incoming executive in these proceedings. If he were already president today there wouldn’t be. Congress passes laws and the judiciary rules on legal challenges to them. He’s way out of his lane.

I see his position has evolved since his POTUS45 days (although this WAS during COVID) ....
... so we'll see how long this lasts.
