Looks promising... ;D

Michael, the pic doesn't come up for me, anyone else?

Your computer sucks!  Here is the direct link; maybe network54 doesn't allow remote linking....

Michael!! How very un SHARP of you, my computer has filed a complaint.

I haven't seen the picture, but I was always satisfied with the Iltis.  Its only real faults I thought were excessive cost and too many unnecessary fiddly little features.  A LUVW should be simple.

No pic for me, either.

The Iltis was, quite simply, the wrong vehicle.  The Germans designed the Iltis as a Liason Officers vehicle.  That's it.  At the exact same time the Iltis was in use with the German Bundeswehr, so was the Gelandewagen.  The Iltis was designed to be small, light, and cheap, with limited usefullness.

It was never designed for patrolling, putting weapon stations on, command, recconnaissance, or any other such task.  It was never (quite obviously!) designed to take the roof off and operate in the rain.

The fact that it could do much more than it was designed for speaks well for it.

But we bought the wrong vehicle, for the wrong reasons, at triple the price.

The picture has worked for me since Michael started the thread.

I agree with your points about the iltis Lance. I've always found the intis VERY under powered. Also very limited room considering what we have to bring in out kitbags while on patrol. I think theres bennifits in having a smaller vehicle when it comes to patroling in some situations but the iltis is still a poor choice i think.

Links to Picture would not work for me.

But I 'right clicked' and saved the link to my desktop and I was able to see it ok.

All of those are now really 'dead' (junk)? or are they just not being used at the moment? (G-Wagon taking over)

The pictures comes up for me no problem...I also thought we were giving them to the Afghan army or did they say they would rather walk?

Well the pic does not work fo me - but I can walk 200m to see the place in question.

Unfortunately the Iltis is a good vehicle for many roles.  It is ideal as a patrol vehicle for a 3 or 4 man det - the C9 or C6 passenger side door mount and a rear C9 mount when the seats have been bolted rearward make for a good urban patrol vehicle with excellent visibility.

The problem was not the Iltis - but that with the end of the life of the 5/4's and the disasterous LSVW we wanted (needed) too much from it.

Yes it shoudl have been a 6 cyclinder and a 5 speed as opposed to 4 and a ground gear.

But the Iltis was a very nimble vehicle able to get in and out of some very awkward spots.

We have the turreted (well cuppolla ring) G Wagons in theatre now - but I still prefer the Iltis - for you can get out and "smell the flowers" met and great with people etc.

For these type of ops it excels.

Probably no better vehicle for patroling all those little Bosnian country roads and getting off the MSR; she may not have been perfect, but the Iltis did what we needed it to do.

The iltis was fun to off-road in!  :D

I personally like the vehicle.  I am however looking forward to the G-Wagon.
