Hi all,

I'm just finishing a CT to the Reg Force and will be put on SLT in St. Jean starting late Apr.  From what I can gather, they aren't being put in the MEGA anymore, but in the old CMR barracks.  Anyone just finish their course that has any tips (on anything at all) for the course?  I'm also planning on driving my car from Esquimalt there, so if anyone has any tips on Quebec auto insurance/licensing that would help a ton.

I hear cell phone and Internet service isn't really available around there, and I don't think I could survive without reading the army.ca site!  Just kidding...

Thanks!

Dimsum, having lived a year on that campus, I can assure you that internet and phone service are available there. It is the cell phone service that is sketchy. Basically, all you gotta do is call Bell *shudders* and tell them where you live and the services that you want and go from there. I had DSL and a standard phone line when I was there. The other stuff you asked about, well, I should leave that to people who know about these things more than I do.

Regarding insurance etc.  I have no subtantiation (ie regs) but, I believe you maintain your current province of residence until you are given a real posting with your DHG&E.  At least that's what I did while there.  Keep your current drivers licence and plates.  Get your mail forwarded temporarily through Canada Post, not permanently.  This is also better for your income tax when the time comes.  If you are a resident of pretty much any other province, you do not want to end up paying Quebec income tax.

Well, you'll be paying it, the pay office will be sure to do that. But you'll see it all back at income tax time if you remember to include the amount of taxes paid on your Relevé 1 with your total federal income tax deducted from your T4. And be sure to file by paper that year. Not electronically...cus La Belle Province will not forward the Relevé 1 information to Revenue Canada.

We got audited for just that this past year, for tax year 2002. We filed through H&R Block and they still tried to make us pay the Quebec income taxes...but once I faxed a copy of the Relevé 1 we were cool.

Regards,

CAW

Negative. Not in the shacks the SLT pers occupy. No one is willing to pay to have it installed.

I am finishing up at the language school this week and I can offer some advice.

Firstly, live out. The adminstration is reasonably open to the idea. All you need to do is submit a memo. Montreal has been done, and if you are ok with a commute, this is your best bet. You can find a place in St-Jean, as pers on my course did, but you will need to invest in some appliances if the place isnt't furished (few are) as well as furniture. If you can move out with a few roomates this is best.

Next, get off R&Q. Its too expensive here and unless you eat MASS quanities of food (and I mean alot) you will save money even if you purchase every single meal. And, as I recommend you get out of St-Jean every weekend you can, you wont be paying twice for food on Saturday.

If you have a car, this is a big plus. Though you are housed at the Campus, you can not use most of it's facilities (aside from the mess). You will have to take all your meals at the MEGA (even on the weekends, which means 3 trips a day if you want all your meals). Also, the gym at the MEGA is the only one you will have access to. The school runs a bus each from the campus to the MEGA on the weekdays and a few times on the weekend to accomidate those without cars. Long story short, if you have a car, life will be better.

As for living on SLT, its okay for the first bit, but it gets very old, very fast. Many of the instructors here (all civies) are either close to retirement, and I assure you that is reflected in their level of motivation. Classes can be very dull, but you will get out of the course what you put into it... which over time, the level of effort diminishes with just about everyone.

One last word... concerning the adminstration in St-Jean. All I will say is that when you have an issue administratively... try to find the answer or what needs to be done BEFORE you raise the issue with the staff. It will make your life easier.

Thats all I can think of for now.

I would concur with the previous comments on the "Shack" at the Old St. Jean Base, my son is there now and lasted 4 weeks there before packing up and getting an apartment in St. Jean with 2 other wingers. No internet, phones, limited messing, food services at the MEGA, and the money they charge for staying 4 to room I would suspect if challenged violates the DCBA guidelines (Deductions for the provisions of single quarters), but hey it's SLT. If you can get out and your life will be much more comfortable, I still don't know how those who remain complete the required OPME's which are internet based courses. Good luck.

How much do they charge to stay in the old CMR barracks?

Not exactly sure but I think he said 150 a month for quarters, and 510 for the meal plan, in any event if you can swing a place in St.Jean you
would be much more comfortable. Also the reason that they are not installing phones , internet or doing any upgrades to the shack is it is scheduled to be demolished soon as it supposedly contaminated with asbestos in areas that no one wants to pay to have removed.

If your looking for info on quebec fees for licence ect....http://www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca/index.php thats gonna be your best bet or you can call them at 514 873 7620

I can't believe you gotta go to the Mega for meals now, what a waste of time.  The food isn't even that good (ie. "hot" hamburgers).  I was on free R&Q and I'm not sure if I would have bothered going there for all meals.

As far as the actual course goes, you'll probably never have another period like it in your career so take advantage of it.  Do everything there is to do in the area.  Check out Burlington, Vermont around the end of the university term.
