I've been in college the last few years since high school, and I've pretty much decided on becoming an electrical engineer at the University of Victoria.

I took a quick look at this site: http://www.forces.ca/media/_pdf/rotp_civ_en.pdf
but it did not have much information. Also just as a note, I did a bunch of searching but didn't find much on my questions.

I have to say this right off the bat: I don't know much about the military system.

My first question is after getting my degree, how long would I have to stay with the military for? Would I be able to do two semesters (8 months) of classes at the university, then 4 months of work for the military? As someone who is becoming an electrical engineer, what type of work would I be doing? Is there any chance I would be sent away from Canada?

It sounds too good to be true, having my education paid for, along with being paid while going to school.

Essentially, I don't want to be sent into some country (like Afghanistan) and be put into a situation where I could end up dying. Is this possible, or would there be a good chance I'd be sent to a possible war zone?

Thanks for the time of everyone who reads and considers my post.

.

A military career is not for you if that is how you feel.

You go where you're told.

From the Booklet Duty with Honour

Unlimited liability

Requires Military members to carry out their lawfully assigned mission and tasks without regard to personal fear or danger. This may even mean loss of life

In no other profession in Canada including the police and fire services, can a member legally ordered in to harms way

The Duty with Honour booklet would be a good thing to give out with recruitment documents, it really explains more of what the Profession of arms is about is all about, and would answer alot of questions.

Im thinking about joining the army(reserves), and this is what I expect.  If you sign up... EXPECT THE WORST.  Expect that you will be called down to Afghanistan or some other unstable place.  Also from my understanding engineers can be pretty vulnerable(same with log officers) because they play a critical role.(setting up infrastructure)

Tom, Reserve and Regular Force are not the same thing. Not just that one is full-time and the other part-time, but also in terms of mandatory deployment.

I'm not in the army (yet) but... I wonder if your question is maybe not as clear as it could be.

Are you really asking, "Are they going to send me to Afghanistan during the four-month period inbetween school years?" I'm pretty sure the answer would be no. Your workup training alone is longer than that. If this is the real question, you will (probably be) deployable after your schooling is done, training is done and you're actually posted somewhere...

Or, were you really asking, "Will I get free school, a salary, a summer job and be deployed at any point in the career I want to do only the mimimum of?" If that's what you're really asking, I suggest you might want to look into another career altogether.

The reason they offer such lucrative packages is because there IS a risk involved and they NEED qualified people.

Armychick... wife of soldier for 6 years, patiently hurry-up-and-waiting in the recruitment process
