A Canadian soldier was killed in Afghanistan Friday when an IED exploded under his vehicle.
The soldier was a private from 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Man.
The incident took place shortly after 6 p.m. local time, in the volatile Panjwaii district of west Kandahar city, long known as a hotbed for Taliban activity.
Brig.-Gen. Guy Laroche, the commander of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan, says the soldier and his colleagues were redeploying when the explosion occurred.
The soldier's name has not yet been released and is the 82nd Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since 2002.
