Political impacts of Ukraine war

Plan B?

I'm of two minds- is it absurd for Canada, Czechia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Poland, Romania to NOT cancel their orders and reallocate to Rafale and Typhoon if the next few weeks play out as they look to, or is considering it an overreaction?
Up until a couple of days ago, I thought it was dumb to ditch our F35 commitment.

Now I’m not sure. Almost feels like we’re ordering MiGs from Moscow. 🙁

That was me as well, about a week and a half ago. The last week and so has really been quite something to watch unfold. I’ve been working at NATO SHAPE and some of its subordinate commands for the last two weeks, there is more than just a buzz in the air about the new direction America (and Russia) is taking. The dark humor going around the water. Coolers has moved focus from talk about Hungary or Turki being removed from NATO, to seeing whether some new organization, particularly based around Europe, expands beyond the historical Eurocorps concepts. After Vance’s speech in Munich and SECDEF in Brussels (and later Stuttgart), the initial shock has worn off, and people really are blinking and muting that America is effectively and behaviorally, breaking from NATO and pairing with the head of the old Warsaw Pact.

Nothing wrong with taking it at face value. I didn’t code it, but it has been known to be done in other cases, so the F-35 absolutely makes sense to be thusly equipped.

I threw the conjecture qualifier in there since I did not do any programming myself in the first person. 👍🏼
I will wager that the Israeli a/c have had those bits removed. I don't see them as putting themselves in any position where someone can say you can't

Way to go Team Canada!

Maybe Premier Trump of Canada's 4th Territory would like to come up for a visit...

You and I would be on the same side of the wager. 👍🏼

Chances are some Israeli tech firm wrote the code in the first place....

…a large portion thereof.

The Israelis can push you out an upgrade… They have overridden all of the lock codes on every item so far.

It’s software, so there are a number of way around lock outs.

It’s all LocMart Missions Systems stuff.
Same way they can lock HIMARS and MLRS into short range only missions.

DoD doesn’t have the tech package for the F-35, so all the software upgrades (or downgrades) is still run by LocMart pushed out by LocMart employees who are onsite contractors.

I don’t think anyone does data penetration as well as the Israelis. Hell, even just down to our level the gold standard for digital device acquisition aoftware is Israeli. And at the edge of my knowledge, a lot of other much squirrelier shit is too. And that’s what they’re willing to share.

I suspect that LMI has a piece of the larger Mission Systems action and local subcontractors…

Trump is too myopic to recognize that America’s allies are a key aspect of its interests. Their soft power is a profound multiplier on their hard power.

America’s raw strength isn’t just all its domestic bases and its CVNs. Its strength comes in part from things like Five Eyes SIGINT sharing, NORAD, foreign basing privileges granted by friendly countries, Most Favoured Nation trading status…You can only accomplish so much within the walls of your own fortress.

America has just ceded great strategic advantage to Russia, and in signalling its sudden profound weakness in strategic engagement, to China as well. It’s telling other countries that the U.S. is an unreliable security partner… How many will look for another partner or partners to dance with? As other countries wean themselves off such a high degree of reliance on the U.S., America will suddenly find many of its levers unexpectedly shortened.

The first couple months of the Trump administration could not have gone better for Putin and Xi.
Japan pivoting to China already (only a little so far)

While the Americans are withdrawing from the world, I predict they will be more active in North America, maybe even South America, making sure none of us get out of line. He’ll leave Asia to Xi and Europe to Vlad. We’re heading for dark times.

Only if you deny the agency of India, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, S Korea, the PI, Australia, etc, etc in Asia, and the agency of pretty much all of Europe except Russia. It won't be the fault of the US if they all roll over. Russia doesn't even have the GDP of any one of Germany, Britain, or France.

This is the decade of Grow The Fuck Up.
