Parliament's return to be delayed until Oct. 16

Well for one thing , people need to stop thinking that it's all about saving the greedy CEO's or Union leaders, it's about competitiveness, just like the toasters, but on a lager price scale. The auto industry in Canada are losing jobs because foreign cars can be made and purchased for less, but if these Canadian manufacturers are supported in part by the government, then Canadian made cars don't have to be sold for thousands more than other cars, thus more cars being sold, thus keeping the plants open and keeping the people employed. After all, it's the common Joe that is going to suffer with the plants closing, the owners are already rich, they'll just open others in other countries. It's all circular, if they help the manufacturers, the plants stay open in Canada and both the CEO's and the businesses pay taxes, they keep people employed and making money, those people then have an income to pay taxes on, they also spend money more frivolously, and paying sales tax on everything. So most, if not all money that the government may dish out will be made back in the long run in taxes, which is better for Canada as a whole. It's all about the big picture.

As far as Kyoto, there were steps and agreements in place, but the Tories don't really think there is anything wrong, so those criteria were thrown out the window. The saying goes"If it aint broke, don't fix it!" not " If it ain't broke beyond repair, then don't try and fix it, until it is!".

Kyoto is a scam and a farce, and not implementable in it's current form. They did well to disregard it. Oh, same as the lieberals did (We didn't get it done, Stephane!!). You want to support the Big 3? You'll be supporting all industry in Canada if Kyoto is implemented in it's lieberal form. You want us to buy carbon credits (there's a shell game) from 3rd world industry, so you can feel better and they can produce more carbon  ::)

The Liberals were asleep at the wheel when they signed onto Kyoto, its a bad deal for us, the Euros were allowed to include soviet era factories that were already shut down in their calculations. source radio pologna, deutche welle, but not CBC.

Wanna save the world, save our jobs, pay the little extra. Our government supports industry in Canada in the form of SRED and IRAP and other mechanisms to encourage development in industry.

As a CEO who has been greasing the wheels of Industry with the blood of the worker since I was 25, I am offended by your greedy remark, OK well only slightly put out. Dont mix small/medium businesses, the backbone of this country in with the Enrons and Tubby Blacks of the world. We work hard, take great risks with our assets, and expect a reasonable ROI, no risk, no return, thats the street rule.
As a paid up member of the UBCJ of A, Millwrights Construction Union for over 25 years, dont lump the construction trades in with the CAW.

A Capitalist pig and a brother all in one, scary huh.

Either way you cant pin this on Harper. Sorry

Here's the deal though when it comes to the Auto industry. I buy quality and I'm afraid that the North american product is inferior when it comes to quality in autos. I use to buy Ford but since 87 I've bought Toyota...why ? because the Fords were constantly being recalled and when the warranty was up they cost me a lot of money to repair.
If the NA product was a similar quality and they dumped the idea of planned obsolesence I'd consider buying the product again.
I say let the free market reign....if the US/NA product is not competetive in price and quality then they need to get their house in order not be bailed out or have trade restrictions placed on superior products.

Interesting...where's the comparison to the US models?
Personally I've never been aware of any serious recalls on my vehicles....I always take it to the dealer for it's suggested maintenance and oil changes. Those recalls don't list why the recall was initiated. When I was with Ford these were important power train issues (aerostar) I do remember one for my Tacoma last year that was to refit the baby harness restraint bolt.....not exactly a show stopper wouldn't you say?? ;D

Not saying that they're worse or better. Just saying they have their problems too. I've looked it up and provided the links, I'm not doing all your work for you. Follow the links and look at them for yourself. You'll find steering, drivetrain, seatbelt and suspension. You might not class those as a 'show stopper', but I would.

But that's not what this thread is about. Start another thread if you want to sell Toyotas.

With most of the component manufacturing being contracted out to the likes of Magna, Steyr, Vanrob, Delphi etc. the quality has improved tremendously, the vehicles we build are much better than ten years ago.

When I am Emperor, economics will be taught in grade school so people will no longer make totally out to lunch statements like this. The cost of the car (or any other subsidized product) does not change, rather the cost is passed on to people who don't want or need it through taxes, and they pay twice, since those dollars are not available for those mostly poor and middle class voters to buy other things. This also hurts the manufacturers who might be offering products and services these people do want, since their customer base has been diminished by subsidies. BTW, this also means these people have less money to buy cars as well.

Welcome to the concept of "Opportunity Cost".

Bigrex, the Cdn govt, led by Harper, will do something for all of these soon to be unemployed unionized auto works. They can get a well paid government position, job security, benefits including dental/medical for themselves and their families, great pension, etc. No union though. So if they loose their job, the CF is looking for lots of people, male and female to contribute. Some of their present skills may even be transferable.

Actually, it is not so much the quality as it is the perception of quality ... and I suspect that the latter lags the former by quite a long time.

Tories launch revamped sponsorship program
DANIEL LEBLANC AND VAL ROSS

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

September 13, 2007 at 4:04 AM EDT

OTTAWA, TORONTO — The Harper government replaced the sponsorship program that brought down the previous Liberal government in a storm of scandal, launching a $30-million initiative Wednesday to sprinkle cash to hundreds of community festivals across the country.

"We're absolutely not going in the same direction," Heritage Minister Josée Verner said in an interview.

"It will be done in a transparent and efficient way, and the advantage is that all regions of the country will benefit, which was not the case under the previous regime," she said.

The complete criteria for applicants has yet to be released, but among the rules that will need to be met is approval from a municipality.

Of the $30-million in new money, $18-million will go to a new program, Building Communities through Arts and Heritage, to support performing and visual arts events that "express, celebrate and preserve local heritage."

Small-town agricultural fairs, for example, could get up to $200,000 each to fund their activities.

"It's good news," said David Bednar, president of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions, reached at the Arran-Tara Fair near Chatsworth, Ont. "Here at Arran-Tara, they're celebrating their 150th anniversary, and I'm sure they'd like new bleachers."

The government is also spending $7.4-million a year to top up an existing program, Arts Presentation Canada, to bring professional artists to larger festivals. The new money will bring the program's budget to $20-million a year, up from $12.5-million.

Luc Fournier, co-chairman of the Canadian Festivals Coalition lobby group, said he was disappointed with the announcement, having hoped for broader, less arts-specific criteria.

"We've created a program to give money to an existing program. Why?" he asked. "I am very disappointed."

Still, Gilbert Rozon, founder of the Just for Laughs festival, said it certainly is a "step in the right direction," especially if his event qualifies for the top grant of $1-million.

Alain Simard, whose Spectra group organizes major cultural events in Montreal, said the influx of "new money is very good news."

The balance of the new money, $4.6-million, will be available to pay for infrastructure costs related to major community anniversaries (100 years old or more) of a "locally significant historical event or person." The eligibility criteria specifically mention band and tribal councils for that program.

"They have rarely been able to get Heritage support in the past, and we know there are festivals in aboriginal communities that can benefit," a departmental spokesperson said.

The Liberals killed the sponsorship program in late 2003 before launching the Gomery inquiry that concluded in late 2005 that the national-unity initiative was at the heart of a Liberal kickback scheme. The Liberal government of Paul Martin fell shortly after that report's publication.

In addition, four people involved in the program have been found guilty of fraud.

In the 2007 budget, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty pledged $30-million a year for a new program to support heritage festivals. It was assumed that because most events take place in late spring and summer, the money would be disbursed quickly.

Instead, Canadian Heritage stalled after the Conservatives, who had promised to cleanse politics of Liberal-style patronage slush funds, were accused of plotting to direct the money to Tory ridings.

Amid the outcry, Heritage said it needed time to develop fair criteria for fund applicants.

Ms. Verner said the announcement of the new program has nothing to do with the three by-elections in the province on Monday. The Bloc Québécois angrily rejected the replacement program as inadequate.

Guess we got that one sorted, next.
