Late Cold War Canadian Army

Referencing the posts of our distinguished veterans of years gone by, how far has the CA fallen.

As far as I can recall originally developed for American airborne units to provide them with manportable firepower . It was supposed to be an analogue to the MG 34/42 GPMGs.

The C5 was the Browning 1919A6, which was really just an improvement over the earlier 1919 which was pretty much an air cooled version of the 1917 watercooled machine gun.
Wiki has a fairly decent history.

It is interesting to me to note that the Canadian Army had just basically acquired M1919A4 and A6’s in 30-06, and never opted for the British version in .303 British (considering the Bren and Lee Enfield rifles of the time where .303), the adoption of the FN lead to their rechambering into 7.62x51 NATO.
Interestingly the wiki article reminded me of seeing the odd over-stamps in the side plates of some C5A1, as C1 was over stamped by C5 on some and others XX’d over , and A1 on some side plates was clearly done after the fact from the C5, as they where often not aligned perfectly.

@GK .Dundas The A6 was developed to give the US Infantry more firepower to compete with the German MG34 and MG42 that the BAR with its 20rd box magazine couldn’t offer - it failed fairly obviously as it was heavier and not nearly as maneuverable, and became a Platoon MG ad opposed to a Squad one — which then drove the M60 for a lighter weight squad machine gun.

Replete with 1970s 'tache. :D

The 'tache has been there continuously for over 50 years (except for the 13 weeks(?) during basic training in Cornwallis - restarted it the first week of my TQ3). That pic is from the 1980s. The styling has changed occasionally, sometimes it's been full pornstache; sometimes well trimmed; it's been walrus-like; it's been waxed and handle-barred; it's been included with a full beard; but it's still there, just more gray than previously.

Also used by regular GI units.
