Justin Trudeau hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

Why do you the number went up. 65 isn’t the number we’d accept…

She did a shit interview. Lots of talking with no real info.
no idea.
65 is the minimum number of fighters required to meet our minimum obligation under NORAD.
65 is the minimum the US would accept otherwise it would be higher. I doubt it was thought at the time that we would aim for it

My feeling entirely watching last night. Sounds like lots of meetings, no decisions, no money, knowing the government doesn't GAF, etc. Nothing on the state of procurement nor plans to fix.
Not impressed one bit. Interview was a good example of balderdash.
Of course, she or any CDS can't do anything if there is no will on the part of a government.

They can always resign in disgust, drawing public attention to the dangers to Canada, and live an ethical life.

But, of course, we know how likely that is. ;)

How to create a chronically unwell CAF 101.
I was surprised to see that having a diagnosis of ADHD would disqualify someone from joining the CAF up until this announcement.
I can see the logic for some allergies being disqualified, peanut/nut for certain where anaphylaxes can occur.

I see little improvement under the next Conservative government. First they will be in power for 4 years, maybe 8-10. A White paper to determine what kind of Military we require, which will take 1-2 years. Next, there will be no money and the cutting of public service.

PP can't even commit to a min 2% expenditures of GDP because he knows that he will not have the money to do this after he assessing the Liberal fiscal mismanagement. He will have counter the liberal damage to all sectors of government, all the promised tax cuts, and pay down debt. On top of all this, is we do not have the trained/experienced personnel to staff procurement for current projects nevermind a revamp.

We are kind of in a pickle. but we will move forward. It will be slow, painful and will have a limited shelf life.

And reading the experts on this forum and with the current CAF leadership, which advice will they take? LOL

PP has publicly stated that he will commit to a min 2% on the CAF and rest assured, Trump for the next 4yrs will for certain be 'suggesting' that we start meeting that floor on spending.

Agree with 3 of 4. Someone with a history of anxiety moving into a stressful job is a recipe for disaster.
With how easily they hand out that diagnoses, I think we have to make that change and actually just assess the candidates. Kids these days are constantly bombarded with a lot of apocryphal info with everything amplified by the click baiting social media. Even getting a bit of snow or rain generates emergency warning notifications, and really hard to unplug from all this.

Nothing wrong with getting some kind of therapy if that's overwhelming, because it seems intended to be overwhelming, but I think getting some kind of coping strategies helps build resilience generally that helps deal with real world stuff once you get past the constant bombardment of bs.

Big difference with someone who was diagnosed and treated in that context compared to someone that is a complete mess that can't deal with life, but means we really need to properly vet recruits early. Had a number of suicides in St Jean when I was there 20 years ago, as well as people on suicide watch, so passing them through to see if they break isn't the best strategy.

Pretty much expected, our in year budgets are cut in the near future, and all the increases are on future projects which are pretty fuzzy and kind of bullshit until they are delivered, especially when our maintenance spending, personnel levels etc aren't keeping up to current demands, let alone any increases in capabilities in the future.

I just wish they would stop spouting a bunch of empty words when the reality is grim AF and trending down; I get the politics involve but they should just probably say nothing, and let the politicians do the lying.

He has stated he will work towards it.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s office confirmed that any military spending on top of what is already planned for the Defence Department would be subject to the Tories’ proposed spending cap — meaning military costs beyond those on the books at the time they take power would see equivalent cuts elsewhere in the federal government.

Just to prove that I'm more cynical than you, I'm of the view that there are near-zero GOFOs who would resign in disgust and voice their opposition to government policies because that would interfere greatly with their post-service consulting business. People rarely cut off their noses to spite their faces. Take a look at the very few who have said anything and in their cases it is roughly ten or more years after having left the CAF.
I don't think the public would really care if the CDS resigns, it would be forgotten about the next day.
Not if it's a properly orchestrated media campaign.
I don't think the public cares about anything CAF related.
Actually they do. Look at the Highways of Heroes phenomenon. The problem is that DND/CAF has some of the least effective media campaigns known to man. With what is going on in Ukraine, there hasn't been a more graphic example of the need for a strong defence in almost half a century and yet the CAF hasn't leveraged that into anything concrete either within the government (for obvious reasons - the current crop are Pollyannas) nor in the eyes of the voting public.

Other than the Navy - bound to its three major facilities - the full-time portion of the CAF hides itself away from the public in isolated bases. It undervalues and underutilizes the one organization designed specifically to be be the interface with the public: the reserves. On these pages we constantly see the RegF distain for the system of reserve force honouraries when they should be leveraging them for the influence that they have with the government.

The CAF and its leadership is it's own worst enemy.

🍻

So you're saying that the need the current government to 'single source' the 12 submarines before they call an election in the spring. :p
