Cost of housing in Canada

Who TF are bosses or friends to question anyone's sexuality?

I mean, is the "risk" of someone gaming the system worth your career/reputation?

2SLGBTQI+

This acronym represents Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities. The “2S” at the front recognizes Two-Spirit people as the first 2SLGBTQI+ communities. The “I” for intersex considers sex characteristics beyond sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. The “+” is inclusive of people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities, who use additional terminologies.

Presumably (+) would include the cis and hetero communities?

Race
In Canada, 1,807,250 people identified themselves as Indigenous in the 2021 Census, accounting for 5.0% of the country's total population (Table 1).Mar 22, 2023
In 2021, one in four people in Canada (26.5%) were from the racialized population, twice the corresponding share (13.4%) in 2001 (Statistics Canada, 2003 and 2022a). Furthermore, the composition of the racialized population has changed as smaller groups increased their population share.
Between 2001 and 2021, the racialized population in Canada increased from 3.85 million to 8.87 million people (Table 1, excluding non-permanent residents). This was a 130% increase, compared with a 1% increase for the White population.

Religion
In 2021, over 19.3 million people reported a Christian religion, representing just over half of the Canadian population (53.3%). However, this proportion is down from 67.3% in 2011 and 77.1% in 2001.Nov 14, 2022
According to the 2021 census, Christianity is the largest religion in Canada, with Roman Catholics representing 29.9 percent of the population having the most adherents. Christians overall representing 53.3 percent of the population,[a] are followed by people reporting irreligion or having no religion at 34.6 percent.[20] Other faiths include Islam (4.9 percent), Hinduism (2.3 percent), Sikhism (2.1 percent), Buddhism (1.0 percent), Judaism (0.9 percent), and Indigenous spirituality (0.2 percent).[21] Canada has the second-largest national Sikh population, behind India.[22][23]

Language
French is the mother tongue of approximately 7.2 million Canadians (22.8 percent of the Canadian population, second to English at 56 percent) according to the 2016 Canadian Census. Most Canadian native speakers of French live in Quebec, the only province where French is the majority and the sole official language.

Residence
Close to one million non-permanent residents reported living in Canada in the 2021 Census. In 2021, 924,850 non-permanent residents (NPRs) were enumerated in the census, making up 2.5% of Canada's enumerated population. NPRs are persons from another country with a usual place of residence in Canada.
As of July 1, 2023, an estimated 2,198,679 non-permanent residents lived in Canada, a 46% increase from the same date one year prior (1,500,978).Sep 27, 2023

You think at a minimum they could let them live on ship. Better than the alternative and could be beneficial for the military with the extra hands for emergencies.

They seem to be talking about people mostly on course, who aren't on a ship. But honestly having people living on the ship is a pain in the ass for duty watches, and usually more of a liability then a help. The non combatants are largely shut down and zero crewed after hours as well.

A better option would be living in the SQs, but they are pretty restrictive in Halifax at least in who can get into them. Unless something has drastically changed, pretty empty over at Shearwater.

2024 cost of housing forcast for Canada

In Toronto, the cost of real estate will swell more than almost any other domestic city, climbing to just shy of $1.2 million.

The only other major city in Canada outpacing the GTA as far as real estate price hikes are concerned is Calgary.

This will still put the typical place in Calgary at $711,612, which is only 60 per cent of the price of a residential property in Toronto.

Vancouver will maintain its spot as the priciest Canadian city in which to purchase a home, though its average price will only shoot up three per cent by next year's end.

Quick look on the map, it seems Shearwater has room to build a accommodations using a camp type structure.

ATCO Electric and ATCO Gas (TSX:ACO.X) (TSX:ACO.Y) today announced that they have mobilized a 200-person temporary housing facility to Slave Lake to be used to accommodate ATCO workers deployed to restore power and gas service to areas ravaged by wildfires. The camp also includes a self sustaining kitchen facility.

"There is an immediate need to provide lodging and food to ATCO workers, many of whom have been personally affected by the fires and have been working tirelessly to restore critical electric and gas utility infrastructure to Slave Lake and surrounding area," said Siegfried Kiefer, Managing Director, Utilities, ATCO Group.

Wildfires in northern Alberta caused extensive damage to the Town of Slave Lake and surrounding communities and impacted power service to the critical oilfield area throughout much of northeastern Alberta. ATCO Electric and ATCO Gas have close to 100 workers requiring immediate accommodation in the community and this number will expand as authorization is received to restore power services to additional areas.

"We have an incredibly dedicated and caring workforce and it is essential that we get adequate accommodations into the area as quickly as possible," said Mr. Kiefer. "ATCO is fortunate to have experience in emergency support and rapid deployment."

Modular units belonging to ATCO Structures & Logistics began arriving in the Slave Lake area on Thursday and continued to be trucked in over the long weekend. The facility should be fully operational by the end of this week. It will accommodate workers from ATCO Electric and ATCO Gas - companies that have served the community for decades.

If Shearwater has spare ground so do most universities and colleges. And most of the pressure for housing seems to be coming from "International Students".

Unhoused sailors in Halifax is not exactly a new thing. As of at least two years ago emails have periodically come from the formation chief to canvas everyone to see if anyone was couch surfing based on members on the WC doing the same. Some of the issue is pers coming off course and expected to get out of single quarters, that was expanded but I'm sure there there are other situations. Not sure that helped or not. We used to have buildings such as Normandy block and St Laurent block, those were pulled down long ago. All PMQ's or at least ones that are habitable are full including Shearwater. Letting sailors live on the ships was looked at and dismissed as duty watches would have to expand as when they were reduced living onboard was stopped.
On twitter the Kracken just said that they are investigating after the article was published, not sure why this is all news to him because it was well known.

I guess they could reach out the universities and see if there is any accommodations available in Fenwick towers or something similar. As was previously mentioned a workcamp could be set up in Halifax at the former site of St Laurent block where there is water and sewer already available and close to the dockyard, just takes money and seems we're all out.

shades of temporary building number 4 in Ottawa. Distinct risk that the bridging solution becomes the permanent solution and you end up with very dreary cityscapes a la east German apartment complexes or think Quonset huts. Better to freeze the numbers of incoming until the infrastructure can catch up.

Most of the unhoused are pers coming off courses so we'll be more behind if we froze the personnel. We need a quick solution and if that solution lasts 10 years then so be it.

was thinking of them being applied in an urban environment to facilitate students and immigrants more than as barracks. But even as barracks, with the will to do so a permanent structure with a bit of curb appeal can be completed in less than a year from conception to completion. What is needed more than anything is the green light to do so. Years back Oakville Hospital required a residence for their student nurses. Rather than purpose build with all the attendent negotiations they simply contracted for an off the shelf designed 12 unit apartment building with 3 bedrooms in each unit. Each unit of course had a living area and a kitchen and accommodated 3 students; each with their own room. Could easily have doubled up in each room if necessary but it never was. The building fit in with the rest of the neighbourhood and it was a very simple construction. Yes you can build an ATCO complex in a much shorter time but it how long will it take to improve the intake of new sailors? If you start now can't you have the facilities in place by the time you need it? In the meantime maybe a dozen of the ATCO homes as temporary whilst the new ones are under construction. Just don't Canadianize the design.

Nice to see the government looking at this seriously. Hopefully this time, messaging = action.

When I first heard of the temporary foreign worker program bringing in skilled workers in area where there was a shortage of skilled workers, I thought it was a good idea. But when they started using it to bring in unskilled workers that companies could continue to pay lower than market wages, I felt it interfered in the labour market, suppressing wages.

I would be extremely happy if this program were reigned in. If it helps reduce demand for housing, that’s an added bonus.
