Collapse of the Assad Regime

God I hope HTS (aka Al Nusra Front aka Al Qaeda) is honest when they say they'll treat minorities well but judging by the record Salafist regimes have, I won't count on it. I genuinely worry for the Christians, Druze, Kurds, etc who will probably start to get the dhimmi treatment first and genocide after.

As for Syria, I predict it collapsing into an Afghanistan type existence. The rebels will form a government, find it tiresome and plenty will defect to the next militia to keep fighting for "true Islam". Violence and repression will escalate. Even the same next set of baddies, ISIL. I hope the democrats, Christians, Alawites, secularists and Kurds can band together and truly launch Rojava as an independent and internationally recognized state.

Assad appears to have landed in Moscow.

Assad is in Moscow, Russian state media reports

Deposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow, Russian state media agencies report, citing sources in the Kremlin.

Reports also say that Assad and his family have been granted asylum by Russia.

The BBC has not been able to independently verify the information.

I’m betting on a foot race, as no one wants to get caught holding the bag when the executioners come.
Already seen one video, purportedly of an Assad family member, being hoisted by the neck into the air by a crane.

I do believe they have already abandoned Tartus.
Reports say yup ...
The Kurds are not one big happy family, some Kurds have cut deals with Turkey and others hate them with every breath ...
Good reminder that there are, indeed, Kurds within Kurds.

Now that's just triggering me, The last time I was in Damascus (1979), as we were driving into the city, we unexpectedly happened upon a recently completed public hanging. I don't know how long he had been hanging there, but we got the fuck out of the neighborhood PDQ, We were a bit noticeable in a white UN marked vehicle.

I saw that one but also saw it attributed to something else. I’d let things shake out for a while before putting any stock in it.

Like any invading and occupying force the rebels will only have a limited amount of ground they can actually occupy. There will be a lot of spontaneous action by local groups and factions, a lot of balancing of accounts, some related to the conflict, probably lots not. It’ll take time for the new interim government to assert their sovereignty and to impose their version of a bureaucratized rule of law over all territory.

As rough as Syria’s recent history is, it’s a relatively developed, educated, and sophisticated population with the necessary raw ingredients to make a state work.

Might as well make hay while the sun shines ;)

US strikes ISIS in Syria as Assad regime falls

U.S. military aircraft struck 75 ISIS-related targets in Syria on Sunday, just hours after the government of Bashar Al-Assad fell to rebel forces, according to the White House.

“ISIS has been trying to reconstitute in this broad area known as the Badiya desert,” a White House senior official told reporters on background. “We have worked to make sure they cannot do that. So when they try to camp there, when they try to train, which we do, we take them out, something.”

The strikes were executed by B-52s, F-15s, A-10s, and other Air Force assets, the official said.

So, knock on effect from Ukraine? Russia pulling all their assets out of Syria to fight in Ukraine. I'm looking forward to seeing if Russia loses their naval base in Tartus. That would be entertaining and improve Med security for NATO.
Whatever Russia has that floats at Tartus has a long voyage back to the Baltic ahead of them. Turkey closed the Straits into the Black Sea so that’s not an option for them.
