Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Still a long way from an embarked helo, if they ever get their. At the moment it's aspirational, with a lot of work needed. AFAIK the announced funding still is a fever dream for outyears, and the NP funding took a big cut at MEPM, so things like keeping the CPFs afloat is a bigger priority.
If anything, whatever is procured out of ISTAR should be expected to see use aboard the AOPS long before embarked helicopters make their transition to the class.

For sure, that will be really useful tbh, and I've seen really interesting uses for drones off of ships, like the French navy using it on one of their auxiliary fleets so their ships that do fuel spill cleanup on the ocean can actually see the fuel slick from the air. I imagine it would be a great way to survey the ice ahead of you, and far more sustainable from a resource limitation point of view than helos.

Your quote made me realized I used the wrong there, and it's too late to edit it so part of me died inside a bit.

Since the CCG is somewhat discussed here.

This is a interesting video of the CCG work on the East coast.

The Coast Guard with the MOST COAST to guard...

I remember when the Henry Larson was built and also meeting up with her at Cambridge bay, at that time the east coast were doing 6 month patrols without reliefs, they were jealous of our 28 day cycle and since they were long into their cycle, things were getting testy onboard. Newfie boats have a totally different vibe than west coast boats.

My spelling is fine, but typing is atrocious and it goes on ahead of my self edit. I fully understand your pain as I'm constantly reading my own posts and feeling embarrassed for grammar issues.

HDW used one of the sailors personal drone that they brought for cool videos and media as an ice navigation aid. Didn't have a lot of range but the ship was excited to try, and reports back were positive. Also cool videos of the ship breaking ice.

The drone videos are so cool to see; one of my cousins is a realtor and they use them to do a 360 fly over the house and property as part of the sales package, and have seen things like drones following along fire trucks leaving the station and some other pretty neat 'chase camera' type things people do on their own. Getting that perspective on things you do routinely is always fun.

Lots of opertional uses as well, even for the standard commercial ones. A fly over of a SAR ship, boarding party etc, surveying things like the mast without needing cranes/man aloft, inspecting big ass tanks without staging or climbing gear, and all kinds of other things come to mind. Some land based FFs are using it as part of their marine FF support and big industrial fires, so tonnes of applications. Because they are pretty cheap they are essentially sacrificial if they get lost or damaged, and no kind of security issues. Sometimes pure COTs is great for that.

I used a Phantom II for my work back in 2013 and used it to get aerial pictures of works and inspect derelict vessels. Problem was that model was prone to fly aways. As good as they were in the day, the new DJI models are light years ahead.

Some of the Canadian domestic options look pretty reasonable for use aboard AOPS and other RCN platforms in lieu of Cyclone for many duties, LX-300 built by Laflamme Aero comes to mind. 3m long, 1.5m long and 1.2m high with a rotor diameter of 2.8m, has a tandem rotor configuration with a few hundred kg weight overall. Apparently the platform has a 180kg cargo weight, with the ability to drop cargo from multiple compartments while also carrying sensors for ISTAR roles. Range of 150km, 8 hour mission time and a max speed of over 200km/h.

I really think the RCN should embrace the UAV Helo and really lean into it. Our goal should be the next MH to be uncrewed.

The RCN will bring the same rigour to airworthiness that it brings to seaworthiness?

At least with a UAV you don't lose people if it crashes.

It aould be a major step backwards for capability. The ability to carry humans is a pretty key capability for our MH platforms.

That said, augmenting our MH with a capable UAS is definitely the way forward in my opinion.

I am agnostic on that subject.

I care about output/operational effects, more than I care about capbadge/occupational protection rackets.

But.

If the RCN is going to play with the big kids, they had better get religion on Flight Safety and Airworthiness. Fast.

Did you miss the shenanigans with what was needed for MAX to get day SWOAD? Don't worry, lessons were not learned for the JSS design.
