2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

The source for this is the CPC Policy Declaration. It speaks broadly of changing all “public sector” pensions to Defined Contribution.

Correct, this would be the big three (PSSA, CFSA and RCMPSA). And anything federally regulated like Canada Post etc.

That's nice to know. :salute:

I know many of those number are already supporters. Many aren’t and have come to hear it right from the horses mouth. Probably because they doesn’t make it into the news. Most have made up their minds. Some haven’t.

All I'm trying to say is that his real life, see it live support seems to be at odds with the polls. In my looking anyway. Certainly compared to the 45 people that came out to hear Carney to his poll standings.
I have followed US politics fairly closely for a couple of decades now and remember several presidential elections in which the eventual losers were convinced they were going to win by the enthusiasm of their rally goers or the number of yard signs. Those are not useful indicators.

Poilievre has to stop sounding like someone who is vaguely (let alone explicitly) dissatisfied with Canada and Canadian society and an unhappy warrior. And he has to stop competing with the other parties on giveaways and more spending. They will always out-bid conservatives as long as conservatives are being honest. And when conservatives are not being honest, it shows.

Whatever his faults, Carney looks like a serious person who belongs in rooms full of serious people talking about serious things. Poilievre has to look like he belongs there, too. Every cheap shot Poilievre or a lieutenant takes makes him look like he belongs at a kids' table. The CPC has to stop the f*cking "gotcha"; it almost always turns out to be based on incorrect or incomplete facts anyways.

We find ourselves in rare total agreement.

Confiscating MAGA hats? I wonder what those supporters feel about their freedom of expression being attacked lol.
Might be a big overlap between the biggest complainers about that and those who say Doug Ford is becoming not Blue enough.

Poilievre behaves like Copps, Tobin and Nunziata did in the Mulroney era: gadfly gotcha complainers who were unsuitable to be the adult in the room.
I’m gonna be a titch more charitable and say far more comfortable as the attack dog. PP’s getting a bit better, but my sense is he’s still loving the pokey-pokey more than the other stuff. Not impossible to turn around, but the clock IS ticking …

Hate to say it but I feel that Ford would not have a good relationship with PP if he became PM.
Ford being friendly and willing to work with Carney is probably paying off for the liberals in Ontario with undecided voters who seek a more collaborative approach with Ottawa

More than one political observer has said that Ontario has been known to keep one team in power provincially while happy to elect another team into power in Ottawa. Maybe this time, instead of Red vs. Blue, if PP wins, it'll be Blue vs. Blue Light? 🤷‍♂️

100%

Canadians who arent planning on voting CPC arent motivated to do so by Poilievre pointing out shit bag behavior to them.

The'll downplay the behavioror convince thelves the CPC would be worse.

They kept the LPC in power for 10 years scandal after scandal. Missing 50 billion?Thats in the past. They're not going to turn on their fresh new guy after a month of gotchyas. Poilievre needs to grow up and ramp up the bullship campaign promises.

True? Sounds and looks like it. I guess we'll see next week.

Except that Trump has explicitly said he wants to bring auto manufacturing within the U.S. and specifically intends to use tariffs to do so. Because of the integrated supply chain it will take some time to certify the portion of value based on origin of specific components, but it also explicitly says that once that mechanism is in place there will be a tariff on the portion of the vehicle value that reflects Canadian and Mexican components. That facebook poster seems to be pretending that just because the mechanism isn’t in place yet, it voids the explicitly communicated plans and intent.

While Trump’s record of following through on economic threats isn’t super consistent, he’s followed through on enough - including steel and aluminum tariffs - that not taking it seriously and responding accordingly is stupid.

No tariffs on US origin parts is helpful for the assemblers, but does nothing for Canadian parts manufacturers. There are far more Canadians working in parts than in final assembly. This will also have the future effect of reducing or eliminating the addition of new assembly lines or parts production in Canada. Until now, we could predict that as new car lines are established, some portion of the production would be established in Canada. Going forward we can no longer count on that. Lines may be closed rather than re-tooled.

So yes, there is an element of crisis to this. That video argues the equivalent of standing the middle of the highway and pretending there’s no danger because you haven’t actually been struck yet.

I have this to say:

The LPC claims to be "the natural governing party of Canada".

IMO its arrogant and presumes just by their existence they should govern, like divine right.
That claim has a fair bit of history though since the majority of Canada's history has been liberal government's. Absolutely sounds arrogant but I get the origins of the statement

Yes they are because they don’t understand the definition of Public Sector.

Go look at their policy platform. It clearly says “public sector pensions” not “public service pension plan”.

P. 10 para 33 ...
Just a (pedantic on my part) reminder here: just because the party membership wants this =/= a commitment by the leader to do it. Still worth keeping an eye on, but like those who would say "it's there, so it's gonna be done", it's more "it's there, so that's what the convention wants done."

My riding in the 905 belt is safely Conservative but unless PP is able to turn things around I suspect we may see a Liberal minority or small majority with the usual East/West and Urban/Rural split we've seen in the past.

With the economic crisis we're facing and the fact that solving it also means solving those exact East/West and Urban/Rural splits in my ideal world if Carney becomes PM, rather than governing with the support of the NDP I'd love to see him reach out to the Conservatives to form a coalition government to resolve this crisis and move Canada forward in a much more united way to greater economic and military independence.

PP as Deputy PM and a Western Conservative as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources as a start along with a strong bi-partisan Defence policy so that there is agreement on our major equipment procurements.

Similarly, if the Conservatives are in a minority government situation I'd rather them reach out to the Liberals to form a coalition "National Emergency" government rather than having to pander to the NDP or BQ for their support.

Highly unlikely to happen but in my opinion would be one of the better possible outcomes of this election.
