Petawawa hosts change of command ceremony

The close relationship between the Town of Petawawa and the Canadian military was once again reaffirmed Thursday, as the community hosted 2 Combat Engineer Regiment's change of command ceremony.

Lt.-Col. Mark Misener is taking over command from Lt.-Col. Alan Mulawyshyn, who is being tasked as the JTF-AFG chief engineer in Kandahar for the next nine months, taking part in ongoing operations in Afghanistan.

What made this routine ceremony special was incorporating it with the Freedom of the City, one of the most prized honours a municipality can give to a military unit. It is usually granted to a unit which has enjoyed a long and amiable relationship with a town.

The unit had already been granted this in 2003, but as part of the tradition, asked permission from town officials to march armed troops through the community, reconfirming the honour.
