Global Warming/Climate Change Super Thread

... it’s hard not to notice a distinct switch in the targets of Lefty protesters over the past few months. They seem to have lost interest in protesting about climate change and have switched to Palestine and asylum-seekers instead.

The shift can be dated to last November during a protest held in Amsterdam, when Greta Thunberg suddenly seemed to decide that the planet was no longer worthy of her complete attention. She told the crowd that there “can be no climate justice on occupied land”, before blathering on about Palestine. It didn’t please one of her fans, who stormed the stage and seized her microphone, but as ever with Greta she seemed to manage to set a trend.

In the months since we have seen fewer and fewer climate protests as progressive mobs find other things to work themselves up about instead. Never mind that we are supposedly heading for climate Armageddon if we don’t abandon all oil and gas more or less instantly, a more urgent injustice seems to be that asylum seekers are being taken out of three star hotels and housed on a barge instead – a barge which, by the way, seemed to be perfectly adequate in its previous incarnation as accommodation for oil workers (although I guess in the minds of climate activists they needed to be punished).

It is sad in a way to be seeing the back of Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil and their ilk – they have provided endless material for commentators like me. But the Left is getting out of climate protesting just in time. Net zero is collapsing around us as more and more ordinary people begin to realise that to achieve it by 2050 is a hopelessly impractical target which would impose vast costs on them. Interim targets such as the SNP’s bid to reduce emissions by 75 per cent on 1990 levels by 2030 are fast tumbling. If you want to be on trend with your protesting, better opportunities now lie elsewhere.

There really needs to be a full-on mental and emotional case study completed on social justice warriors. Are these people the middle ground between a functioning citizen and a homeless person?

Sure. And what happens if said study says they’re fine?

Extremely left-leaning individuals suffer from mental illness at a very high rate.

sea level rise is around 4mm a year and accelerating. At 425ppm CO2 it is estimated to be at equilibrium 20 meters +/- 5m

Glass half full: you'll be able to take the ferry right to the airport - way more efficient ;)

I read a book once. It talked about building houses on rocks and building houses on sand. It recommended building on rock.

Prodigy Clean Energy and its partners hope to produce floating nuclear power stations that, like in this illustration, could dock in remote Arctic communities and supply less emissions-intensive power than the diesel-fired plants they use now.

I like it.

what is not to like. Been running naval vessels and the like for decades now with no disasters and really, a barge is nothing more than a ship with no means of self-propulsion. Probably cheaper to build than a land based structure

By 2050 that's 4 inches. Just think; a mere 4 inches is all that's preventing that flood map from becoming reality.

I think I'll take my next trip to Imperial Hobbies during a king tide in January with a strong westerly blowing, and experience the thrill of living dangerously.

not sure what the flood map is actually but one can play with it online. In the article they mention 50cm and 1m
