After a thorough pre-qualification and bid evaluation process, the Government of Canada has selected the H92 proposed by Sikorsky as the winner of the Maritime Helicopter Project.&lt;br /&gt;

“ The Government of Canada firmly believes that the Sikorsky H92 helicopter represents the right helicopter for the Canadian Forces at the best price for Canadians,” said the honourable Bill Graham, Minister of National Defence. “The Sikorsky H92 provides a world-class robust, multi-role helicopter that will serve our defence needs for years to come.”&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
“ With this completion of the evaluation of proposals and the selection of the winning supplier, the Maritime Helicopter Project has marked an important milestone,” said the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services. “The Government has conducted a fair, open and comprehensive procurement process, and now looks forward to the next stage of the procurement process, the establishment of formal contracts with the supplier.”&lt;br /&gt;

Sikorsky will be awarded two separate, but interrelated contracts. The first contract will cover the acquisition of 28 fully integrated, certified and qualified helicopters with their mission systems installed, and will also include modifications to the 12 Halifax Class ships. The second contract will be for a 20-year in-service support contract that includes a training building, and a simulation and training suite. The contract should be finalized and signed this fall.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Delivery of the first helicopter is required to be no later than 48 months from contract award with the remaining helicopters to be delivered at a rate of one per month thereafter. The contract has a series of bonuses for early delivery but also imposes penalties for late delivery, making it very much in the company’s interest to deliver the helicopters as soon as possible.&lt;br /&gt;

The Challenger is a twin-engine executive jet used in the Canadian Forces as a medium- to long-range transport Aircraft.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Based in Ottawa, but belonging to 8 Wing Trenton, Ont., 412 (T) Squadron provides high-ranking government officials and foreign dignitaries with air transportation worldwide.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Four VIP Challengers and two Utility Challengers are assigned to the Squadron. The Utility Challengers are used for military transport and can be configured for medical evacuation for CF personnel on duty anywhere in the world.&lt;br /&gt;

The C2 is an updated Leopard 1A5, which was developed in Germany in the 1980s. This tank deploys with a crew of four, including a commander, a driver, a gunner and a radio operator/loader. The 105-mm L7A3 gun is capable of engaging targets day and night, while on the move under adverse weather conditions, through the use of a fully stabilized fire control system with an integrated thermal imaging system and laser range-finder. The Leopard C2 Tank is also fitted with a gunner’s secondary fire control system and a commander’s fire control system. It has two 7.62-mm C6 machine guns. One is mounted inside the turret and another can be mounted externally on either the commander&#039;s or the loader&#039;s station.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Spall liners have been added to the refurbished Leopard 1A5 turrets to increase crew protection  —  slightly reduced interior room being considered an acceptable trade-off. Protection was further improved by the application of add-on MEXAS composite armour panels. Leopard C2 TankThe Leopard C2 is also fitted with two banks of four smoke grenade launchers on the turret. The tank may be “sealed-off” against nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) threats. It is a minimum-maintenance armoured fighting vehicle and complete replacement of the engine and transmission is possible in 30 minutes under field conditions. When properly fitted with a conning tower, it is capable of deep-fording or submerged fording where riverbanks are prepared for exit and entry.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Leopard C2 was designed so it can be fitted with add-on armour and all of the new battlefield sensing and communication systems the Army plans to introduce over the next few years. There are 114 in service.&lt;br /&gt;

The DND has said that it is replacing the Leopard C2 &amp;quot;with a new direct fire system that includes ... three platforms”. The service chameleon is the Polaris (A310-300 Airbus), a twin-engine, high-speed commercial jet easily converted to passenger, freight or medical transport. By 2004/05, an air-to-air refueling capability will be added to the fleet.&lt;br /&gt;

CC-150 PolarisTwo Polaris are being converted as strategic air-to-air refuellers to support the CF-18 Hornet fighter-bomber fleet.&lt;br /&gt;
Stationed at 8 Wing Trenton, Ont., 437 Squadron (The Huskies) is the only transport squadron equipped with the Polaris, which replaced the aging Boeing 707 in 1997.&lt;br /&gt;

The five-plane fleet&#039;s primary role is long-range transport of personnel and equipment, up to 194 passengers or 32,000 kg of cargo. They&#039;ve participated in operations supporting Canadian Forces, NATO and numerous United Nations and Red Cross initiatives. During December 1995&#039;s Operation Alliance, about 1,161,000 kg of freight and 800 personnel were airlifted to Zaire using Polaris, Boeing 707 and Hercules transports. The service chameleon is the Polaris (A310-300 Airbus), a twin-engine, high-speed commercial jet easily converted to passenger, freight or medical transport. By 2004/05, an air-to-air refueling capability will be added to the fleet.&lt;br /&gt;

CC-150 PolarisTwo Polaris are being converted as strategic air-to-air refuellers to support the CF-18 Hornet fighter-bomber fleet.&lt;br /&gt;

The Aurora Incremental Modernization Project (AIMP) was begun in 1998, and is planned to run until 2010, with an overall budget of $1.45 billion. AIMP is an amalgamation of 23 individual projects, grouped in four chronologically consecutive “blocks”, and overseen by the Aurora Project Management Office. Among the goals is to turn the CP-140 into a multimission platform that can provide over-land surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering capabilities in addition to its traditional maritime roles.&lt;br /&gt;

It is estimated that AIMP-improved CP-140s will be able to operate until approximately 2025.&lt;br /&gt;

The Agusta-Westland CH-149 Cormorant, is a fully certified off-the-shelf civilian utility helicopter. It has been modified from the military specifications of the EH-101 to include search and rescue-specific equipment and physical characteristics and performance requirements to meet Canada’s SAR responsibilities. This modification provided reduced procurement costs, a rear-fuselage ramp, a single rescue door with both hoists on one side, and eliminated unnecessary military equipment.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Shaped rotor blades, strengthened by titanium strips along the leading edge, allow the CH-149 to improve lift and increase speed, lowering the stall speed and reducing vibration. This enables it to withstand high winds (exceeding 50 knots), provide superior gust response while carrying out routine tasks of hoisting, starting and stopping.&lt;br /&gt;

The CF-18 is a multipurpose, high-performance twin-engine fighter that can equally well handle air-to-air (air defence, air superiority, combat air patrol, etc.) or ground-attack (close air support, battlefield air interdiction, etc.) roles, aided by on-board computer systems that can be quickly re-programmed to the mission at hand. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Hornet’s primary roles include air defence, training, tactical support, and air superiority. It has supported missions in both NORAD and NATO. Other roles also include aerobatic demonstration and aerospace test and evaluation.&lt;br /&gt;

==Modernization==&lt;br /&gt;

The CF-18 Incremental Modernization Project, launched in 2001, is an eight-year project, divided into two phases, that will result in a total of 80 CF-18 Hornets (62 single-seat and 18 dual-seat aircraft) being significantly upgraded in their radios, avionics and weapons systems as well as in the structural integrity of their fuselages, wings, and tail sections. The IMP is based on a U.S. Navy Engineering Change Proposal (ECP 583), which defines how the USN/USMC are upgrading and extending the service life of their F/A-18s. Total costs for the Incremental Modernization Project are not yet confirmed, but are estimated to be at least $1.9 billion (Cdn). Including various other CF-18-fleet enhancements that are not officially part of the IMP, total spending on upgrading the lifespan and operational effectiveness of the Hornet fleet will come in at about $2.6 billion.&lt;br /&gt;

Phase I of the IMP is occurring between 2002 and 2006, and involves the procurement and installation of a new on-board radar system; “Have Quick” jam-resistant radios that are compatible with technology employed by NATO-ally air forces; a combined interrogator/transponder unit to ensure that CF-18s are recognized as “friendlies” when spotted on allied radar scopes during combat operations; a stores management system for weapon-system and associated-equipment control; new mission-designation computers; and embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) capability.&lt;br /&gt;

Again, not officially part of the IMP, but related to upgrading the CF-18’s capabilities are these other projects: a fuselage Centre Barrel Replacement Project (for 40 of the upgraded aircraft); an Air Combat Manoeuvring Instrumentation System; an Integrated Electronic Warfare Support Station; and the Electronic Warfare Test Equipment Project.&lt;br /&gt;
