Taleban forces in Kabul are moving into residential areas of the city in order to make it harder for the Americans to bomb, a United Nations official has said, citing independent sources in the Afghan capital.

But the US says it will not be deterred from its air campaign, while indicating that further commando and other ground operations will be used to flush the Taleban out.

The Taliban say Australia‘s contribution of troops to the conflict in Afghanistan is unnecessary.

Taliban‘s ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef, when asked to respond to the departure of Australia‘s troops to assist with United States led strikes on Afghanistan wryly derided the military contribution.

"I think America is a super power, there is enough power in Afghanistan, there is no need for Australia to join," he said.
