RCR vs PPCLI for my future

Sending my transfer to the reg force and I’m torn between RCR and PPCLI. My dream since the beginning was to be able to get into a unit like CSOR and would like to know which unit is more likely to get me there.

Also how are the living conditions in Pet, Gagetown and Edmonton?

I personally wouldn’t mind, not sure the wife would agree but at the end of the day I’m just looking for whatever is going to offer me the best training possible. Would prefer to stay in the east though at 3rd battalion if I were to join PPCLI.

FWIW, several troops from my old reserve unit went on from a Class A Infantry position to pass CSOR or JTF2 selection.

You don't need ot be Reg F to make it into the 'specials'...

Yeah, I’ve been told but I’m also looking for a more permanent position in the army, more training opportunities such as Recce and deployment opportunities.

Neither will give you a "leg up" if you are interested in attempting SOF selection - they are both fine Regiments. Select based on where you want to live, understanding that you will at some point likely be posted away to other Army bases.

Infantry spend a lot of time away from home. You're best option is to pick a location where your wife will be happiest and have a strong support network.

My other personal bias is PPCLI is the place to be if your a RegF infantry guy

But those are just personal biases - and let me be the first to say absolutely meaningless...

You've received VERY good advice in picking somewhere where the wife will be happy. I don't know how long you've been married for, but having a happy wife strongly dictates how happy you'll be when you're not at work...so definitely not something to just gloss over...

The nice thing about PPCLI is there is a 2/3 chance you'll be going to Edmonton.

So lots to do in your off-time, plenty of work if your wife wants to seek employment opportunities, etc

There is the risk you may end up posted to 2 PPCLI, and end up in Shilo, Manitoba tho...

(Not to disrespect to anybody posted there! But it's a far cry from Edmonton...yikes...)

A pro to going RCR is if one of your goals is to get on with CSOR, having them located at the same base is super handy.

I know quite a few former RCR guys who've wondered over to say hi & get familiar with the unit, and its not uncommon for that unit to seek volunteers to be roleplayers, OPFOR, etc etc

I'm not familiar with how the economy is going in Ontario these days, so I don't know how abundant the work opportunities might be for the wife.

At the end of the day, you don't need to be RegF to apply to CANSOFCOM. Or infantry.

(That being said, having a solid infantry-skills foundation will absolutely be a benefit not so much during selection, but during your Q-course if you end up as an Assaulter.)

And the way CANSOFCOM is recruiting these days, I've got a gut feeling they are hurting for people like everybody else in the CAF.
