Thirty-six infantry soldiers from Canada's 3rd Battalion Royal 22nd Regiment's Reconnaissance Platoon participated in an historic visit to Brunei Darussalam from October 1-22, 2008.
Commanded by Captain Gilles Henry, the Canadian troops conducted jungle warfare training with the Gurkha soldiers of the 1st Royal Gurkha Regiment who are based at the Seria jungle warfare training school. The training was coordinated by Captain John Jeffcoat of the British Military.
This was the first visit of a large group of Canadian soldiers to Brunei Darussalam since the Second World War and a demonstration of the friendly military relations between Brunei Darussalam and Canada.
In exchange, during Canada's winter months of January and February 2009, the Ghurkha soldiers will travel to Canada for winter warfare training with their Canadian hosts. Canada and Brunei share common interests in peace and security and in the development of professional military forces.
Canada's new Defence Attaché to Brunei Darussalam, Lieutenant-Colonel Keith Moody, views the visit of the 36 Canadian soldiers as an opportunity to enhance and establish future training between Canada and Brunei Darussalam. A ceremony to mark the friendly military relations between the two nations took place on October 7 at Berakas Garrison where there was an exchange of gifts between the Commander of the Royal Brunei Land Forces, Colonel Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Rosli bin Pengiran Haji Chuchu and Canadian representative Terrence Cowl, Chargé d'Affaires.
