Nutrition Droughts and Food Deserts

Here is an excellent thread on disappearing small town grocers in rural America - put out of business by unfair and bluntly illegal trade practices of Big Box Stores. The problem is severely acute on Indian Reserves in the US and certainly in Canada.
Our farm supplies a little bit to our local grocer- and he does mark up quite substantially just to keep the lights on. But there’s going to come a time when Superstore, Safeway and Save On will be all that’s left in the BC interior. It’s really sad to see how local economies just can’t compete with big box retail and the Internet.

Sweláps Market has recently established itself in Kamloops. Hope it does well, and serves as an example to others who might start an independent operation. Shame it seems to need a government as backer to open a grocer, though!
