A Marine armored vehicle took on water off the coast of California. One Marine died, 8 are missing and 5 were rescued. Hoping for the best outcome here but my pessimistic side is rearing its ugly head. Prayers out to our Marines.

One U.S. Marine has died and eight service members are missing after an accident during a training exercise off San Clemente Island, officials said Friday.

The incident occurred when an amphibious assault vehicle carrying 15 Marines and one Navy sailor began taking on water at about 5:45 p.m. Thursday during a training exercise, according to the United States Marine Corps.

One Marine was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and later died. Two others were injured and taken to hospitals where they were listed in critical and stable condition, respectively.

Five other service members were rescued.

The name of the Marine who died will be withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin, officials said, and "all family members who are affected will be contacted directly by their Marines’ chain of command."

I wonder if this a new one or old one, amphibious AFV's are always risky. RIP, I suspect the missing ones are still inside.

The hehicle went to the bottom of the ocean beyond safe diving depths so the USMC has the missing as deceased. A tragedy for all involved.

“It is with a heavy heart, that I decided to conclude the search and rescue effort,” said Col. Christopher Bronzi, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit commander. “The steadfast dedication of the Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to the persistent rescue effort was tremendous.”

All next-of-kin have been informed, the Marines said. The Defense Department has not yet named the Marines involved. The Marines said efforts still are under way to recover the bodies of the troops.

DoD has named 7 Marines and a corpsman who were lost during the exercise.

Lance Cpl. Guillermo S. Perez, 20, of New Braunfels, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene before being taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego on Thursday, the 15th MEU said. He and the others were all with Bravo Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment.

The remaining five Marines presumed dead were:
• Pfc. Bryan J. Baltierra, 19, of Corona, Calif.
• Lance Cpl. Marco A. Barranco, 21, of Montebello, Calif.
• Pfc. Evan A. Bath, 19, of Oak Creek, Wis.
• Pfc. Jack Ryan Ostrovsky, 21, of Bend, Ore.
• Cpl. Cesar A. Villanueva, 21, of Riverside, Calif.

Training is almost as deadly as combat especially when you try to do it on the cheap as the Marines did with the armored assault vehicle. I suspect the Corps will want to send a recovery effort down to the ocean floor to recover the lost vehicle to determine the cause of the mishap.

Oh yikes, they really were all so young  :(  Just kids

RIP lads

WASHINGTON — The bodies of service members who were aboard an assault amphibious vehicle last week when it sunk during a training exercise off the California coast have been found, the Marine Corps announced Tuesday.

The location of the vehicle was identified Monday by officials with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force and the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to a statement from IMEF.

The assault amphibious vehicle was carrying 15 Marines and one sailor from 15th MEU when it began to take on water Thursday evening. The crew had just finished training on San Clemente Island and were traveling back in the vehicle to their ship. Eight Marines were rescued from the sinking vehicle, though one died at the scene. Two Marines were sent to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The 15th MEU is based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The remains have been recovered which should give their families closure. Proof positive that " no man will be left behind. "

SAN DIEGO — Authorities on Friday recovered the bodies of eight service members killed when a Marine landing craft sank in hundreds of feet of water off the Southern California coast, authorities said.

The remains of seven Marines and a Navy sailor were found after underwater salvage operations that followed the sinking on July 30. They will be flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to be prepared for burial by mortuary affairs teams, according to a statement Friday night from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

The remains “will then be released to their families in accordance with their wishes,” the statement said.

The amphibious vehicle sank in 385 feet (117 meters) of water as it headed back to a Navy ship after completing routine training, the military said.
