He was a bit loose on his indirect defence of Canada’s climate change focus, and he was overly generous on Joly’s, Leblanc’s (and MacKinnon, who at the time hadn’t bowed out yet) reasoning for not entering the leadership race, ie. that they were committed most strongly to country first, and not because they felt they couldn’t compete in the race.

It is. As long as the internet exists in its current forms, aspiring politicians are going to have to seriously consider before every utterance:
- does this have the potential to sink a future ambition?
- might I have to change position or lie about this in future in a way that sinks my ambition?
Not that I believe more than a handful are that forward-looking.
