The NDP says it is working with the ethics commissioner and intends to file a formal disclosure report on a $1,895 rocking chair given to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's wife in exchange for posting about the item on her Instagram account.

On Dec. 10, Singh's wife posted an image of the Grand Jackson Rocker by Canadian furniture company Monte Design on her Instagram account, mentioning the company. The party said Singh would repay the cost of the chair after CBC reported it was given to him and his wife as a gift.

On Sunday, Singh published an image on his Instagram page of himself sitting in the same chair cuddling his newborn daughter, with the furniture company tagged in the image.

"The chair was given to Gurkiran with an expectation that she would promote it on social media. There was no expectation that Jagmeet would post about it," NDP spokesperson Mélanie Richer said in a statement to CBC News.


 
Sweet deal for the chair company. They get free advertising and they get paid for the chair.
 
Imagine how bad/unaware you have to be to not know it’s against the rules to accept large free gifts by virtue of your employment as a politician.

Imagine how stupid your employers, the public, have to be to accept that “oops” as being honest.

Sure, Jagmeet made a huge error in judgement. He broke the rules. He knows better and should have done the right thing. This has become a tempest in a teacup, properly so. I am confident the right thing will be done in the end.

But this incident makes me incredibly proud to be Canadian. In other countries: oligarchs steal the wealth of the nation; dissidents are silenced or arrested; graft and corruption are widespread; and politicians are basically thieves - billion dollar bank accounts are rumoured to exist.

Here in Canada, we get upset over a $2,000 chair. And we properly hold someone to account for this. Well done, Canada.

Billions of tax dollars are unaccounted for in Canada. Citizens don't blink because they can't visualze how much that really is. Canadians understand $2000 though.

But are you (and all of us) willing to read about good cops, politicians, doctors, etc in the news with the same amount of effort and concern? Are you willing to shout their praises when good is done or will you (and all of us) stay silent and not do anything?

It's easy for us to sit back and cast those stones all the time when only the bad occurs. Kudos need to be given when good is done. The problem is too many people sit back and say, 'well that is what they should be doing, they are just doing their job'. Realisation that sometimes, a lot of the times, just 'doing the right thing' is the hardest thing to actually do. There are so many competing elements out there that its difficult to make the right decision most of the time, it's too easy pass the buck.

Ummmm….you’re part of the problem. Let’s see a post of yours where you complemented Bruce for the value of his thoughts, or his specific effort here as a moderator. You went straight into “you’re part of the problem.”

Personally, I like a number of your posts that show a perspective from experience in more parts of the. World than most Canadians will see, but your last post is a bit hypocritical…unless of course, you intended it that way, to demonstrate your Canadianess…

I would love to read/hear those stories but unfortunately they'll never lead on the nightly news because.....ratings.

As a side note, I was a Union rep for most of my career in Corrections. I was always more then willing to compliment management when they acted decisively and correctly. My thought was if you're going to rip folks when you think they are wrong, then you need to tell them when they are right or you become the boy who cried wolf.

I see what you’re saying- and I agree with the sentiment. But I Disagree that paying for the chair is holding someone to account- the chair is a symptom of entitled people that lack the integrity to do the right thing when no one is looking. I am biased and hyperbolic because it’s social media and that gets an unreasonable response from me lol

That’s a massive blanket statement, and that’s generally not useful, but They are untrustworthy in $2000 chairs (the small) and they are untrustworthy in the big. 🤷‍♀️

But it is nice that this is the level of political “depravity” we generally see. Shitty meal claims lol

You are spot on - I am part of the problem - I completely agree with you and you are 100% right.
I should be thanking Bruce and all the others for doing an incredible job for maintaining this site, completely without any compensation, because they believe that it brings good, it brings a forum where like minded people can come and openly discuss ideas and concerns and beliefs. But I haven't because it is too easy to take things granted, to accept that when something is working and well working, to just assume that it does and it always will do so. I was wrong to make that assumption and I will openly admit that I was wrong to do so.
Bruce - and all others that maintain, build and support this site, please know that I am grateful for all of your work and dedication to this site and for all that its stands for. Good2Golf was spot on - mea culpa.

The average person is very unaware how many zeros are behind what is presently unaccounted for.
 
Not just bad that they can be bought but to my mind it is even worse that they honestly believe that they are entitled to it. They deserve it.
