Considering the interest that Prime Minister Harper's government has in the region (namely China and Vietnam), perhaps Canada should consider a defence arrangement with the Philippines similar to the Fiver Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) alliance that the UK, Australia and NZ have with both Malaysia and Singapore.

To think the Phil. Navy Public Affairs website wrongly identified the Canadian warship above as Australian when the rest of the report clearly says RCN/Canadian. :facepalm:

Canada to help Phl Navy improve skills
MANILA, Philippines - Canada has vowed to find ways to assist the Philippine Navy in improving its capabilities.
The commitment was made Tuesday during the courtesy call of Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Neil Reeder to Navy chief Vice Adm. Jose Luis Alano in Manila.
"Ambassador Reeder expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm in working with the Philippine Navy especially in the field of defense cooperation," Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Gregory Fabic said in a statement.
"He (Reeder) assured Vice Adm. Alano that they would continue to seek ways on how they can assist and help the Philippine Navy in its capability and capacity upgrade," he added

"Canada has a sophisticated technology base and has advanced ship-building industry, technological edge and indigenous research and development," he added.
Reeder was accompanied by non-resident Canadian Defense Attaché to the Philippines Col. Michel Latouche and Cmdr. Daniel Charlebois, commanding officer of Canadian ship "Regina."

Philippine Navy welcomes Australian counterparts

The PN personnel warmly welcomed the arrival of the Her Majesty Canadian Ship “Regina” at Pier 15, South Harbor, Manila Feb. 1, 2014.
Headed by Cmdr. Samuel B Adlaon, the PN welcoming party conducted port briefing aboard the ship regarding security, intelligence and health situation in Manila.
The ship headed by its Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Daniel Charlebois will be in Manila from Jan. 1 – 5, 2014 for a port visit.
In connection with the visit, Cmdr. Charlebois is scheduled to render a courtesy call to the Flag Officer in Command, Vice Adm. Jose Luis M Alano on Jan. 4, 2014.
