FBI: Contractor offers Navy info to fake spy

(CNN) -- A U.S. Navy civilian contractor has been charged with trying to sell personal information about thousands of military personnel and reservists to a person
he thought was a foreign spy, the FBI said.

Randall G. Craig Jr., 41, was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday after his arrest last week, said FBI spokeswoman Shauna
Dunlap. She added that no information was compromised during the agency's investigation. Craig was arrested Friday, she said.

A grand jury in Houston indicted him Tuesday on charges of aggravated identity theft and exceeding authorized computer access for personal gain.

According to the indictment, Craig attempted to sell the names and Social Security numbers of thousands of Navy service members "to a person he believed to be an
intelligence officer of a foreign government." "This was an undercover operation and not an actual spy," she said.

Interesting case.  Has anyone recently been able to wiggle out of something like this using the 'entrapment' defense?

Entrapment?? How so??

Nothing in the article infers that they approached him with a request that he get info and sell it to them. That could certainly be argued to be entrapment.

Perhaps he had tried to sell it previously -- and someone narced him out and they got him in a sting by posing as buyers for what he offered up willingly? The article certainly doesn't hint of "entrapment" to me.

Im not suggesting that entrapment was involved either.  Im asking if anyone has tried to use entrapment as a defense in these circumstances.  Its a common defense, although not often successful, whenever a person is caught using a covert or undercover program...
