Dec 2024: Azerbaijani airliner crashes (shot down?) in Kazakhstan (split from UKR thread)

Those pilots really fought hard to keep that aircraft under control, that there are any survivors is a testament to their efforts.
Reminds me of the Sioux City crash where they had to bring it in and land on engine power only, no hydraulics. Many died but some walked out.

May the pilots and passengers of the Azerbaijani flight rest in peace. Amazing that any survived.

Yes. Given that there was ongoing air attack and air defence activity, I doubt anything was going normally. But sending it out of the area entirely with some sort of catastrophic emergency (I doubt ATC would have known a missile hit), and probably numerous wounded onboard is incomprehensible. My best guess is ATC, in good Soviet fashion, simply said all airspace is closed and GTFO.

I expect the plane would have been stuck at low altitude due to depressurization, so south into Georgia was a no-go due to the mountain range. They should have put it down ASAFP, and Magas and Vladikavkaz were both close just west of Grozny.

Since this isn't directly linked to the UKR fight, it's specific enough with enough new info coming out to make it worth its own thread.

Meanwhile, a bit more of the latest ....
Anyone want to dig out the MH17 playbook to review what'll happen next from Team USSR 2.0?

Agreed.

I also agree Russian needs to be slapped a few times. This is murder - like the Iranian shootdown.

Tough to say that. I think it’s a catastrophic fuckup, but we don’t know enough about the Ukrainian attack that was or recently had been underway, what the airspace looked like, what was communicated by whom and if the airlines received it… Ukraine’s been sending in drones based on converted civil aircraft. Depending on exactly how the sequence of events played out, the airliner may have been coming in to land at around the exact same time sudden low level drone attacks were happening.

I don’t know enough about how air defence and airspace deconfliction works in such a case, but I can easily imagine how a combination of circumstances in the fog of war could lead to this.
