Here are the definative answers to the two queries regarding ranks.
First of all a Colour Sergeant is the rank between Sergeant and Warrant
Officer Class 2, and is found in the British Army. Its insignia is three
chevrons beneath a Crown and is exclusive to the Infantry and the Royal
Marines. In the Guards in Full Dress only Col Sgts wear a Regimental
colour insignia surmounted by a Crown over top of the three chevrons. All
other Arms and Corps call the rank Staff Sergeant. In a rifle company there
is a single Colour Sergeant who holds the position of Company Quarter Master
Sergeant CQMS. On parade two I believe Colour Sergeants are in the
Colour Party as the escorts to the Colours.
Canada used to have Colour Sergeants and Staff Sergeants in the
pre-unification days when it took the Army seriously.
A First Lieutenant is a position, not a rank, in the navy. I understand it
to be the equivilant of the Adjutant in an infantry battalion. Generally
they are responsible for, amongst other things, the discipline of the ship‘s
company and should be feared. I know of no rank called a First Lt in the
British or Commonwealth Forces.
