9 missing after Coast Guard, Marine aircraft collide

U.S. authorities are searching for nine people after a U.S. Coast Guard airplane and a Marine Corps helicopter collided over Southern California.
Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer Allyson Conroy said the crash was reported at 7:10 p.m. local time on Thursday, about 80 kilometers off the San Diego County coast and about 24 kilometres east of Sam Clemente Island.
The C-130 plane was based out of Sacramento, Calif., and flew search-and-rescue, law enforcement and logistics missions, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Jetta Disco. The FAA said the plane carried seven people at the time of the crash.
The AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter was on a training mission when it crashed, said Miramar Marine Corps Air Station spokesperson Cpl. Michael Stevens. It was based at Camp Pendleton and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is headquartered in Miramar, Calif. The FAA said the chopper was carrying two people.
The Coast Guard planned to search through the night, sending three cutters and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to the area. The Navy sent four vessels and multiple helicopters.
