2 NATO soldiers killed, 2 wounded in southern Afghanistan by AP

A roadside explosion in southern Afghanistan killed two NATO soldiers Wednesday, the alliance said.
Two other soldiers were wounded and were evacuated to a military base for treatment, NATO said in a statement.

The statement did not disclose the nationalities of the soldiers or the exact location of the blast, as is the usual procedure when NATO informs the public about casualties.
Southern Afghanistan is the centre of the Taliban-led insurgency against Afghan and foreign troops. Canada has about 2,500 troops in Afghanistan, most of them in the
southern province of Kandahar. British, American, Dutch and Australian troops are also serving in the south of the country.

The U.S is reporting that they lost two Marines.

From The Sandbox thread.
Two US soldiers killed in Afghanistan: military

KABUL (AFP) — A new US Marine force that began deploying in Afghanistan last month said Thursday it had suffered the first casualties since it began operations in country, losing two soldiers in a bomb blast.

The 2,300-strong US Marine Expeditionary Unit confirmed that two soldiers, whose deaths were announced on Wednesday by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), belonged to the unit.

"We lost two Marines on the 16th of April early in the morning in Kandahar," a spokeswomen for the newly deployed force, captain Kelly Frushour, told AFP, referring to southern Kandahar province.

The soldiers were attached to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which began operations in southern Afghanistan on April 10.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the explosion, but similar acts in the past have been blamed on Taliban militants.

The unit was Washington's recent contribution to ISAF, which is fighting the growing Taliban insurgency here.

There are now three press releases on the ISAF web site stating that two ISAF soldiers were killed and two wounded.

The first is PR # 2008-142 dated the 14th of April. I believe that this one is referring to the loss of the two members of the RAF.
