Army Reserve Restructuring

Well, as long as the A Res hasn't been planned into our national mobilization effort, plus a bunch of other issues identified in this report related to the need for a 'greater contribution' from those slackers, I guess they don't deserve to get paid at all ;)

"In the New Vision, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) notes a greater contribution from the Reserve Force is needed to achieve the CAF’s operational outputs. The Regular Force faces mounting pressure to concurrently execute its assigned or implied missions. The Reserve Force must be integrated into CAF Force Posture and Readiness planning in order to contribute to maximizing the operational output of the CAF and prepare for large-scale mobilization. While the Reserve Force is not integrated into such planning efforts, the latest FP&R directive identified this need."

"We give you no kit, 120 year old unfunctional buildings, the bare minimum of ammunition and training and no legislative support with teeth, but you're not contributing enough there, guy"

And units fight to preserve their non functional buildings at the cost of hundreds of millions.

On an aggregate level, the CAF has and takes very generous leave.

Your individual experience may vary.
100% I just got to 3 weeks vacation civvy side after 7 years. That doesn’t even start discussing how poor quality most the vacation time I have is due to seniority determining when you can take it.

Grass isn’t always greener.

I'll have to give this a detailed read. It's the first time that I've seen this.

On the surface it looks no different then the Hillier "new initiative" during the Afghan unpleasantness when the expectation was voiced that a reservist should plan on an operational deployment roto every six years. Same as here - expecting new outcomes while providing no new inputs for the system.

I'm a great fan of new visions steeped in the old reality.

🍻

Why don't you come join the Reg Force ?

I've read enough of your posts to know your employer isn't someone I would want to work for. Mind you I'm at 26 years in my job and you're at 7, my expectations may be higher.

Been there done that, I am happy being out now. I sometimes wish my military career had gone differently but can’t change the past.

Where I am I get a extra week of vacation after every 5 years, capping at 7 weeks after 25 years (which is very generous for my industry). I also get paid much better than I would in the Reg Force, I get unlimited overtime if I want it and I am not forced to do it. The work is also very diverse and interesting.

I also get to choose where I live, which with my salary and the low cost of living in the area means I can enjoy basically the traditional ‘Canadian/American dream’, able to support my family off my single income, have a house and a couple cars in the driveway. Not to mention my son is physically and mentally disabled so I can’t live the type of lifestyle the military demands well giving him the care he needs.

There is cons to my civvy work (shift work, some union stuff, lack of vacation initially, pretty crappy pension, etc.), but theres also lots of pros (getting to come home every night is a big one). Just as there is pros to the Regs (such as vacation, getting to do some cool stuff, meeting tons of different people from all over the country, excellent pension, etc.), but also lots of cons.

I have no idea where that disconnect is on the ground because everyone from Pte to LCol wants upgrades desperately where I'm at in both armouries in the city.
There was a solution to this, but it was fought over for years until we see what it is today. A barren field.

FWIW I think our particular area needs a new armory - a big one - to house all the units in this area.

But what do I know

Something tells me you know a thing or two about the state of a certain armoury that rhymes with Pinto lol.

Ours isn't as bad by a long shot but it's just outdated in everyway. A new super armoury like Dennison in Toronto probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

I was sorta thinking a super armory that could house infantry, armor, sigs, medics etc etc - and the Svc Bn.

Then the problem is trying to keep units from fighting each other - the ARes truly needs a look at.

Crazy crazy idea - have the reserve regiments parade in Shilo over weekends. We have simulators for everything, a training area, and the MTF for facilities. There’s even clothing stores and messes, and accommodations available. Failing that parade out of a school building at 17 Wing. We are spoiled with this reserve regiments need their own buildings things. I think the exact same thing about Dundurn and Edmonton btw.

Has 17 Wing fixed the hole in the parade square at Minto yet?
Last time I was there it was "fixed" with plywood but to be fair it looked better than the rest of the potholes on the parade square lol. Mind you I haven't been there in quite a while, a habit of mine is to go to Minto as infrequently as possible haha.
