Remembrance or Veterans?

When my father was KIA, Feb 1943, someone in Ottawa - Percy Nelles' puzzle palace - decided that someone should write letters to the mothers and widows of the others KIA. That was the "standard thing," after all. It was, normally, the job of the captain, but he was dead and the XO was somewhere in a long, not terribly well organized repatriation chain, so ... "let's ask the captain's widow to do it," they said to themselves. It can't be our job, they decided, we're just a bunch of regular force RCN types waiting for the Navy to build ships worthy of us because we couldn't be expected to go to sea in those slow, wet, little corvettes that were actually fighting and winning the Battle of the Atlantic.

Here is a sample of one of the letters:
Wow, just wow ... Well done your mom, and thanks for sharing that bit of history to give us some lessons to learn (with hopes that those who need to, do). :salute:

I believe the addition of Indigenous Veterans Day as part of Remembrance Day ceremonies has caused some confusion as to whether we are remembering the grave or honouring the brave. Also if Parliament wanted to have a Veterans Day on another day it shouldn’t be too hard to make that decision. But they didn’t so here we are …

It’s “alive”, as in it’s an official day started in 2002.

Not to be confused with “is it celebrated publicly”.

(And yes, I had to look it up myself. I had heard of it but didn’t realize it was a real day.)

To add to your commentary

How Officialdom arrives at designating days . . .

For example, Canadian Forces Day is observed on the first Sunday in June as a result of a motion passed in the House of Commons on 25 April 2002. That motion read as follows:

"That, in the opinion of this House, the government should, on an annual basis, proclaim the first Sunday in June “Canadian Forces Day” in recognition of the tremendous contribution by the Canadian Forces, both at home and abroad, in such areas as the defence of Canada, our NATO commitments, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, search and rescue and peacekeeping. 9"

Ever since the first Sunday in June was recognized as Canadian Armed Forces Day, successive governments have issued statements marking the occasion each year.10

And those days that Heritage Canada lists . . . except that they seem to have left off Canadian Armed Forces Day.

And when I saw a link to a CN (Canadian National) site, I thought "wow, a whole month", however, only south of the border.

As long I can park for free year round ;)

Of course they did …

There ought to be a Heritage Minute made just to celebrate the decision making process at Heritage Canada and its sub ministry the Department of Historical Disparagement.
