Officer Choices
« on: April 01, 2017, 16:16:06 »
Hello.
I recently applied to the armed forces. I completed the CFAT and I scored well enough to receive all three of my choices. I have to wait 10 months to continue my application because of past mariguana usage. This is not the point in contention. The point is I don't know what occupation to choose as I scored well enough to pursue all three in Direct Entry (have a uni degree too). I signed on for 9 years, but if I like my groove, I could do 25. I'm 24, single, and done partying.

I am deciding between Intelligence, Infantry and Military Police (officers). I want to help our (lovely) country. Whether from its behind a desk or on the field isn't my concern. I want to be useful and make a real difference. My dream is to be able to be stationed somewhere I could buy (land, build) a house, preferably in Ontario, but I would be open to living the majority of my years in a Canadian house.

I'm fit, love to research, love working with others and have done hard work most of my life. From how I see it, all three are important careers in protecting the country.  InfOff is hands on, dangerous, highly technical and difficult. IntOff is office research, highly analytical, 0-error and highly competitive. MPolOff is sitting at a desk filing out paperwork.

Success in IntOff would likely involve me learning French (learned basics in grade school) ASAP and possibly picking up Russian, Arabic or Mandarin. Getting ahead in InfOff would likely involve me daily improving my physical conditioning until I'm basically a machine. Getting ahead in MPolOff would likely involve me being able to work well with others and be amazing at paperwork.

In conclusion,  here's what I want from my military career. I want to help my country. I want to be damn good at it. I want my own house (out of city). I ONLY want to spend my extra money buying land (I'm a very simple dude). And I want to fix my credit from fair to great.

Let me know what you think.

I think maybe you need to put more time into thinking what you want to do. the three trades are different and unique, Watch all the videos on the Force.ca website and read their descriptions.

It seems you don't have a clear goal or or something in mind but want to serve your country. You said you have 10 months so really do all the research you can on the 3 trades so you know what your getting into. Learn as much as you can because you want to be sure this is what you want to do.

Start off with some of these.

http://www.forces.ca/en/job/militarypoliceofficer-74
http://www.forces.ca/en/job/intelligenceofficer-76
http://www.forces.ca/en/job/infantryofficer-20

Then search the forums here and learn some more. You have 10 month so really think because you don't want to get into something you don't want to do.

BTW, I'm not a recruiter or anything so maybe someone with real knowledge might wanna share their lamborghinis

Joey867,

While your application is on hold I would consider the advice from Untamed Spyder. Learn as much as you can about the three trades to prepare for your interviews.

FYI, all Officers do second language training (French). If you are interested in learning other languages you might consider an NCM role like IntOp, as opposed to IntOff.

Also, consider that ultimately you will not be the one to make the decision of which trade your are offered. You will be made an offer for whichever trade the CF deems appropriate.

But, understand that there is more that  goes into that decision than just your interests etc., Int and MP are highly competitive trades. From what I understand Int accepts less than 5 recruits for DEO annually.

To improve your chances of getting an offer for your preffered trade I would suggest two things:

1) Order your choices appropriately
2) Make sure you are on the "competition/merit" list in time for the start of the fiscal year (April)

This will give you the best chance for success.

Best of luck!

Thanks Untamed Spyder and Brynne. Thanks for letting me know I'll be placed where I'm best suited. It definitely reassures me I'll be placed in a position where I could succeed and where I'll probably enjoy myself as well. I guess I'll leave a lot to the person who grades my suitability.

However, I'm also taking the time to go through the threads in order to figure out what the jobs are like. Because you're right, no point waiting a year for a job I don't like. I did watch the army.ca videos repeatedly over the past 2 months. But they're mostly outdated and the forum has the most relevant information.
